"...No, you can't go back to Constantinople..."

Platinum is, so far, the best available catalyst for fuel cells.

It originally was called "duck tape" !
Quote:
...During WWII the feds asked Johnson & Johnson (the Band-Aid people) to develop a material that could be wrapped around ammunition cases to keep them dry. Once the soldiers got ahold of the stuff, though, they found a million other uses around the base for the strong, waterproof tape. Because rain rolled right off it and it was green, somebody got the idea to call it “duck tape.”...

Platinum stocks are depleted enough today that it is now economically viable to harvest it from car exhaust.

Duck/duct tape is not useful for ducts that transmit heated air because the plastic in the tape melts easily.

A person on the cleaning staff here is named "James T. Kirk." He dislikes his name and the ribbing he gets for it, but he is about 40, an age consistent with the hypothesis that it is a result of his parents being Trekkies.

I once encountered a poor soul named "John Jacobs". He gets flashbacks every time he hears that song.

Telescopes: The Maksutov design was invented in 1941 and perfected in 1947.

Yeah, we talked about it some. We were both glass-pushers back in the day. I think my mirror was bigger than his, but he made more of them.

He was a man of many talents, even bringing up a son on his own, now that is special. I have done the same but with two, so we had that kinship too!

Maksutov was great at editing, great at inspiring, great at giving to others what he could never seem to find for himself.

Here's an interesting random fact: The number of people who thought of Mak as a friend, especially through long-running private conversations, is mind-boggling. The man carried on a correspondance of a volume and complexity closer to the writers of the 18th century than the 21st.

William the Conqueror died after being thrown from his horse, which had trod on the hot embers of a town William had just burned to the ground.

In 1980, Paul Spangler erected a new genus and species for a torridinicolid beetle from Brazil. The genus name Ytu was chosen because in the local dialect it means waterfall, signifying the habitat of the beetle. The specific epithet brutus was chosen for another reason entirely.
