Geography, sorry can't think of anything else.

When it was found that its neighbour was somewhat higher their names were transposed, ensuring the one so named remained the highest.
What & where?

While my first thought was to assume mountains being the target, that is not explicitly stated in the query. So, buildings, parcels of land (or bodies of water, etc.) are fair game.

More hints? OK.

Eroica was half-way there, historically, not geographically, speaking.

Eroica's name always makes me think of that piece of music that was supposed to be about Napolean before he became a dictator. Is the answer related to Napolean or am I just crazy?

Kai,

The answer has nothing to do with Eroica, symphony or poster's name in this thread (&other threads). That it has something very indirectly to do with Napoleon probably would not help, there is a vague connection but entirely not in the context here. Look at my last 3 hints & pray for a wizard of Oz.

I'll put you out of your misery. It's Mount Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in Australia.

G'day mate! Thank God! You'd think ONE of those Yanks, Canucks or Pommies would know what OZ is.

Yes indeed:

Your turn to ask a question.

Captain Matthew Flinders is famous for circumnavigating and mapping the Australian mainland. He also had a famous grandson.

What was his grandsons name, and what was he famous for?

William Matthew Flinders Petrie, who found the Merneptah Stele. One of his students found Tutankhamun's tomb.

I got the Oz hint, but could you please explain how the Eroica hint fits in?

So you were 1/2 way to this answer, historically in this thread & historically in the matter of order of events, but not geographically.
