I think you are mixing together three different stories. Beethoven was a big dog, Garland was a big orange cat that liked lasagna, and I don't remember any wizards in either movie. Maybe you are thinking of Hairy Potter (you know, its that hairy cat/dog/potter thing).

I don't know if Zardoz qualifies for spoiler warnings, but for what it's worth, consider this a spoiler warning. I'd hate to ruin the movie for anybody. [*My own sarcasm alarm triggers, despite the self-filter*]

The key plot point (if anything can be said to be a key plot point in that flick) is that Zed (Sean Connery's character) investigates his god Zardoz (a big flying stone face, a ship of sorts) because he was shown a book in a library ruin, by the guy (Arthur Frayn) who was faking Zardoz and winding up the Brutals.

The book was Wizard of Oz. Zed, of course, got to the passage where Dorothy (played by Judy Garland in the movie) discovers that the Wizard was bamboozling the ignorant locals with "a loud voice and a giant mask".

I'd have to watch that part of the movie again (which I'm not going to do, not tonight, anyway) to see if the Beethoven reference was Arthur Frayn namedropping to entice Zed to read the book with the intention of provoking the "events" in the movie.

Fact: No horse has EVER walked on the moon!!!!!

I know what you are thinking: "What about all that video footage that clearly shows them?"

Well let me explain. It's really very simple. It was FAKED!!!!!

Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin took a pantomime horse costume with them when they went. They donned* it before emerging from the LM. There was some argument over who would get to be the front part of the horse, and Armstrong won. He stepped out onto the lunar regolith and said, "That's one small step for mare**, one giant leap for a stallion."

The horse we saw dancing on the moon was clearly not a real horse because it wasn't wearing a spacesuit.

When Buzz*** Aldrin was challenged by Bart Sibrel to "swear on the bible that [he] took an actual horse up there and not just a pantomime horse costume" Buzz responded by hoofing Sibrel on the jaw.

*A word which here means "put it on".
**As in "female horse", not "sea of".
***Now his official first name.
The real shame of it is NASA has covered up the critical role the pantomime horse played in powering the LRV.

Thanks, everyone; I'm feeling much more relieved now.

Back in 1952 I eagerly awaited watching 'The Pantomome Horse Radio Television Hour' on the DuMont Network ("If You're Not Watching DuMont, You're Probably Staring at a Radio, Wondering Where the Picture Is"). Every Thursday night Marcel the Pantomime Horse would introduce variety acts from a set that looked, in retrospect, remarkably like Tranquility Base, right down to the chassis of a Tucker sitting near Lem, the Happy Little Rocket. It was sometimes hard to understand Marcel, since he either never talked or his voise couldn't carry in a vacuum.

Sadly, Marcel was implicated in the Hollywood Red Scare by Sen. McCarthy. Since he actually WAS a Red Agent there was little DuMont could do, and the show was renamed 'The Great Patriotic Peoples' Amusement Show' in 1953. For some reason, it caught on in China, even though there were no televisions there yet.

Is it logical to feel a vague sense of guilt for posting an off topic comment in a rthread that is composed of mostly off topic comments right after or during a conversation?

Heh. For what it's worth, I felt guilty for my last reply to Swift. I was, after all, on a topic. I kind of feel guilty for this one, too.

American Sign Language has "sign set" for that. it translates roughly as "train...zoom".

Heh. Is either "train" or "zoom" rendered as a flat hand passing rapidly, horizontally, near one's own head?

Similar to the "I like you" gesture of the flat hand passing across one's throat.

I get the impression Paul Beardsley has access to an online office supply catalog.

Yes, it was perfect too, too bad you missed it.

And now a word from Mutual of Omaha.

Like the dung beetle, who rolls up dung to plant its eggs in, so does Mutual of Omaha rolls up your payments to plant their eggs in. Soon, those eggs hatch and thousands of tiny newly hatched insurance salesmen scurry across the country. Many of them will be eaten by dangerous predators, like the Mortgage Crisis Frog, but the fastest one will soon prosper and make us lots of money. This is known as Gross Domestic Product.

Lets watch as Jim tries to capture the wounded GDP, as it thrashes around the world economy.
Hey Marlin, how about getting off your butt and helping me a little here. ARRRGHH!

I went out the other day to count my chickens before they hatched. I figured I would be laughing all the way to the bank. Unfortunately this went against the grain of my accountant. He believes a penny saved is a penny earned.

Anyway, so there I was, busy as a beaver by the side of the road - when I saw one of the chickens cross. I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say that chicken was out of the frying pan and into the fire. (Arizona, as you know, is hot as hell.) So this wiley coyote ran up and tried to jerk that chicken - you may think I'm not playing with a full deck - but I screamed "let my chicken go" and went after it.

We fought right there where the rubber meets the road. In the heat of battle, I gave him a dose of his own medicine - intending to knock that coyote from here to next Wednesday. At first blush it looked like I might prevail, but that coyote started acting crazy, like he'd lost his marbles. He fought me like a one-legged man in an *** kicking contest. To make matters worse (no good deed goes unpunished) but that bird-brained chicken thought it was the cock of the walk and dove into the fray.

Now, I'd told you that pavement was hot - you could fry an egg on it. I ended up looking tarred and feathered.

How's that for a case of the Mondays?

I didn't know accountants had grain. Does that mean they are made of wood? Can we build a bridge out of them?

Are you suggesting accountants are like witches in that they're made of wood (don't forget you can also build bridges out of stone...)?
