Default false stupidity: questions that sound dumb but aren't

Post your own or answer previous ones. To get started, here are a few:

- Which weighs more, an ounce of gold or an ounce of iron?

- Who wrote Bach's "Eine Kleine Nichtemusik"?

- Including his 9th and final symphony, how many symphonies did Franz Schubert complete?

What do you mean by, "but aren't?"

Ounce volume, or ounce mass?

It's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (Mozart)

Just nine (but he wrote nearly a thousand pieces (songs, operas, chamber music, piano, and solo pieces) all together.

My question:

What's the volume of a circle with a radius of 1 inch?

ounce mass, of course--and you got the other two wrong--they have answers, just not as obvious as the wording of the question implies (e.g. Schubert did not complete 9 symphonies and Bach's Eine Kleine Nichtmusik was written by someone else and attributed to one of the Bach's).

Er... Beg to differ.

Here's why:

"Franz Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer. He wrote some 600 lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. He is particularly noted for his original melodic and harmonic writing."

Ok, so it was a trick question, with "complete" being the trick, and the correct answer is "two," as seven were "rescued" (and probably finished) by others.

Another trick question, and Pretty Darn Quick, too!

The reason I still beg to differ, tdvance, is several-fold.

First, you never specified which Bach, leaving the reader to assume the normative use of the name, Bach (as most normal humans would do).

Second, the apparent misspelling was also apparently unintentional, especially since Google's first response was, "Did you mean: "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik""

Third, your use of the word "complete" is by no means absolute. Even if he only completed 51% of the work, the credit is still his, as any such work, if finished by a researcher, would borrow on his historical works and techniquese to make it as authentically Schubert as possible.

Fourth, I find, and have always found, this approach/practice to be belowboard, smacking of a lack of integrity.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to trip others up with misdirection and subterfuge. It DOES take someone of integrity and maturity to refrain from that approach and instead use an aboveboard approach to open, honest, and straightforwardly frank discussion.

By the way, the term "aboveboard" originated from the difficulty of cheating at cards when the hands are above the table.

Thanks, Mahesh. That helped, but not as much as channeling my frustrations into an Indiana Jones flick...

Well, the topic is "Fun and Games"--sorry you thought it was an attempt at intellectual dishonesty. Of course, by the same logic, just about any joke or riddle is intellectually dishonest.

Please pardon my ping. My second appendix (the one that holds all the leftover coffee grounds) must have ruptured.
