That makes a kernel of sense.

In fact, "weird" was originally spelled "wyrd." However, in most cases, you can track the origin of a word by whether it's spelled "ei" or "ie." (There are a lot more exceptions than that little bit of doggerel mentions.)

Phonetic spelling has been suggested many, many times in English's history, and it's generally boiled down to a question of whose pronunciation we'd follow. Just ask the Gershwins.

Right, that's one of the things a Baloney (I know I spelled that wrong) Detector is supposed to look out for.

And nobody will write you angry letters if you state your opinion on it in a newspaper.
Debate gelato, not creationism. Hate mail kills trees.

If it's really "i before e except after c" then it should be spelled "wceird".
