Default muscle weighs more than fat?

I was watching beauty and the geek and a geek said muscle is denser than fat but they weigh the same. Is this true?

A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same; that much is certainly true. However, an equal volume of any material that is denser than the other material being weighed will always weigh more, regardless of what the two materials are. That's what higher density means.

So are you saying muscle is not denser than fat?

No, that was not said.

The density of skeletal muscle is 1.06 g/ml. or a pound of muscle takes up 0.4279 liters.
The density of adipose tissue is 0.9 g/ml or a pound of fat takes up 0.504 liters.

No, it's not a huge difference but muscle would sink in fresh water and we all know that fat floats.

It might seem hard to believe because fat people weigh more than lean & muscular ones, but that's because the fat ones have a lot more volume.

The weird thing is: the "dumb beauty" on the show knew this bit of science and the "geek" was wrongly convinced that she had to be wrong!

It's why a muscular person can weigh more than they appear to. It's also why my scuba diving friend tries so hard to keep the weight off, because he's constantly having to fight the buoyancy of his belly fat when in the water.

It's also why several of my athletic friends are categorized as "obese" on the basis of their Body Mass Index, while having a lower-than-average body fat content. Their body mass is high for their height, but they appear physically slim because more of their mass is muscle.

My health teacher said told us this and said that we should never use weight alone as a measurement of how much we have excersised.

Circumference is usually a good indicator of fitness...

Your teacher is right. It is dumb just to follow some values without understanding what they actually mean.

That's true. In addition, large belly itself is a potential health risk (it increases the possibility of diabetes etc.).

And lets not even talk about that other indicator: When your body mass reaches the point where it has an appreciable gravitational effect!

(We have a very fat and lazy cat who nonetheless manages to occasionally catch a bird or two. We suspect that the birds just fall into her gravity-well and break their necks. She then picks them up and claim credit for a "kill".)

Sometimes, the "fat and lazy cat" act is just a ruse. My brother had a huge cat (10 kilos or so) who was also polydactyl (6 toes on each front foot and 5 on each rear foot). He would lay on the ground on his side, under a huge shade tree. This infuriated the local mockingbirds to no end. They would dive at him and scream at him. He just laid there, eyes half closed with only an occasional twitch of his tail indicating that he wasn't asleep, until a bird got a little too close. Then, still laying on his side, he would reach out and snag it. The birds left him alone after that, at least for a few weeks, until the temptation got too great and the scene would repeat.

I gotta set up a video camera to spy on my cat. It would be so cool if I could catch my moggie doing something like that! :-)

awesome. Our cats did better with lizards than birds, but they are fun to watch nonetheless
