Default Laser black hole

IMAGINE being able to peek inside a black hole and even perform experiments there. It may not be as far-fetched as it sounds, thanks to a team which claims to have simulated a black hole’s event horizon in the lab.

I guess. You Americans spell some words different from us Brits, for example 'car tire' and 'car tyre'.

Not to mention using different words for the same thing!
Flat - Apartment
Rubbish - Trash
Boot - Trunk
Bonnet - Hood
Damper - Shock absorber

Not even close! The Queen is a figurehead with no real power. A much better fit would be:

Prime Minister - President

To a great extent, modern presidents in office simply follow the directions of their advisers and of the political bureaucracy.

Not even close, DiA, in principle at least.
As you will know, the US President is quite likely to be of a different party to the Senate majority party. (Or is it Congress? Forgive my ignorance!) The enormous parliamentary majority that Blair had in the office meant that he could behave like a President , and did, but the PM is merely the leader of the majority party in the House of Commons. And the PM's Cabinet of Ministers are also MPs, unlike the President's cabinet of Secretaries of State, though again, Blair appointed a host of 'Special Advisers'. The PM must pay close attention the House and appers there at least once a week to answer Parliamentary Questions - the President speaks to Congress once ? a year?
And so on.......

But our language, divided by itself and the Atlantic is infinite in its variety;
A rubber, in English is an eraser,
a dyke is a large ditch
A gentleman wears his vest under his shirt,
and his pants under his trousers.
And a lady keeps only money in her purse.

There is something vaguely similar called the Unruh effect;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unruh_effect
An accelerating observer sees black body radiation coming from an apparent event horizon behind her.
Not very similar, perhaps, but like this idea, the Unruh effect offers an opportunity to observe radiation from an event horizon in the lab.

If it is a him does he not see it?

When I took Honors English in High School (Not that it did any good...) I used "they" or "them" in an effort to not be gender biased and politically correct.
My teacher ( A rather butch female) got after me for it severely. She said it was Correct English to say "he" or "him" when not being gender specific. In that case, "he" and "him" are not gender specific. Deviating from it makes it gender specific and distracting.
Just the nature of the language. And I went with it from then on.

Well...

I'm not much of a Politically Correct guy anyway...

Methane - Methane

You don't just pronounce aluminum differently, you spell it differently (aluminium)

In the UK, we all speak English (except the Welsh. And Gaelic speakers. And the Cornish. And of course the other minority communities for whom English is a second language.), but there are some very strong regional accents. Newcastle (geordie) and Glaswegian are especially difficult to understand for the rest of us - and hooray for regional accents!

What American accents are difficult for the rest of you?

John

It really depends on geographical separation! Some regional-subcultural dialects (southern California "valley girl") are almost unintelligible to the rest of us. Mostly, it's "he talks funny.

After reading the article I'm wondering whether or not these experiments are truly a re-enactment of what happens in an event horizon or the illusion of it- a facsimile.

What are the possibilities that studying this effect will provide insight into the behaviors within an event horizon that are accurate given that there are a great many 'missing factors' as to the actual conditions near a black hole?
