Default 'Breakthrough' at Stonehenge dig

"Archaeologists carrying out an excavation at Stonehenge say they have broken through to a layer that may finally explain why the site was built. The team has reached sockets that once held bluestones - smaller stones, most now missing or uprooted, which formed the site's original structure.

[...]

The dig is the first to take place at Stonehenge for more than 40 years."

Being that I'm not British (therefore, really don't know too much about stonehenge)...
I was trying to recall what the bluestones were. (I do remember a whole lot of phases in the history)

On the OP's link, a related video on the history showed two incarnations of bluestones. First, the original stone construction (which, appears in the video as slightly outside the current ring). Second, an inner ring after the big rocks we see now.

Am I to assume they are talking about the first appearance of bluestone?

Also, what about the pre-stone phases of construction? Wasn't there some previous digs for this, or is there some difference in what they expect of the blueston holes.
