They would probably figure out radar. Upon figuring out radar, planetary astronomy becomes child's play. Upon figuring out electronics and focal plane arrrays, the beginning of visual sensors would be open to them.

They would have to think to point it up, to a place where there is nothing, they have tohave the imagination, to point a major peice of equipmant, at nothing. Imagine trying to get the funding, "What, you want to make specialy made radar, to send them up into the Nothing? Why bother?" Some scientest would call it a crazy idea, a waste of equipment. Besides, radar is a kind of seen, are we talking creatures that have an an active (like sonar) visual system, or completly blind?
