Possibly the largest intelligent beings in the universe might exist as so-called Matrioshka Brains; these hypothetical beings are described here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrioshka_brain
A thinking being as large as a solar system.

Such a large entity would think very slowly, as there might be time delays of several minutes between one side of the object to another (due to light speed). Would such a single entity suffer from 3rdvogon's suggested lack of innovation and inspiration? Possibly; although with such a large mind, even an uninspired MB might be far more innovative than any human society.

Would such a large artifical entity count as life? That would depend on the definition- but it would certainly share many of the characteristics of living organisms.

WHo knows ... maybe god does exist after all ... I am not sure that it is the idea of God that I dont understand or rather the fact that why would a god would care about what every individual human did or wether it was happy or sad in its afterlife.

To me, life is local entropy reversal that reproduces. By local entropy reversal, I mean it takes raw materials, carbon dioxide, water ,nitrogen, and trace elements in our case, and using energy, combines to form bonds and patterns. This LOCAL reversal of entropy is what distinguishes life from fire, fire takes complex bonds and breaks them down.
