Err...I missed those phrases as well. That's what I get for reading the paper in the morning without having my coffee yet. I did think it was a pitbull. It's an odd story nonetheless.

But dogs are still better than cats.

No matter what anyone says, I will always be partial to dogs. After all, you never see cats leading the blind, protecting livestock, or finding people who have been lost or burried under mountains of rubble. And don't make me remind you people that the first earthling to orbit our planet was a dog.

Cats on the other hand... they just kind of hang around and watch. Most of them aren't even really devoted to their owners. That's why the dogs will always get my vote no matter what. They are very hard and willing workers, and they deserve our appreciation.

Actually, for whatever it's worth, I'm glad you posted it, since it makes a GREAT story this way. Definitely more interesting than if it had been about a dog, since there are lots of stories about dogs behaving this way, Greyfriar's Bobby being the most notable example. But to hear about such a devoted bull is amazing! =D>

Well, if you're going for first-Earthling-in-space props, I'd guess that Laika would probably have to tip her hat in turn to various bacteria, protozoans, other microbes, maybe even a few very small insects or mites that probably went up on a Sputnik before her. (I concede that I have no idea how thorough the Soviets were about decontaminating & sterilizing their early satellites, but it seems a good guess to me.)
Power to the protozoans! 8)

Yeah, and if it was about a cat it would be like 'Stop the Presses!!'

So dogs are useful appliances.
I'm not particularly fond of my refrigerator.

You're not? Have you ever thought of where you would be without it?

Having spent a couple of months without one once, I can tell you that I'm VERY fond of my refrigerator. But it doesn't compare to my cats. I left my last refrigerator behind. I brought my cats with me.

I feel sorry for cat people. They've obviously never experienced a close loving relationship with a dog. If they had, they wouldn't waste their time with a snotty-nosed cat.

Humans require love, and that's what a dog will give you - limitless, unqualified love. The best you can hope for from your cat is haughty disdain. Have you ever looked into a cat's eyes? They're cold and lifeless. It's like looking into a shark's eyes. A cat looks right through you; it's as though he's thinking, "If this guy died, I'd eat like a king for months!"

All joking aside, you are wrong. My cats meet me at the door when I get home. They can't wait until I sit down, so they can curl up on my lap and purr. Then, when it's time for bed, they race ahead of me and jump in the bed. Once I'm in the bed, they each find a spot to curl up next to me. They get the most loving looks on their faces.

The last broken heart I suffered from was mitigated by the adoration of my cats. When I cry, they come to find out what is wrong.

They love playing with me. They love playing with each other. They're very independent, but they have chosen to love me.

I don't really have anything against dogs, but cats love you just as much and don't require things like being walked in the dead of winter.

You have obviously never owned a cat. My cat it almost constantly by my side and will jump up on my lap at every opportunity. There is a strong loving bond between us. Cats can also have a great deal of expression in their faces. They smile, they pout, and they can have a look of adoring affection. Your comments about cats only shows that you don't understand them. BTW, how can someone who prefers a slobbering dog possibly refer to cat as snotty-nose?

In my experiance Dogs noses are a lot snotty-er.

Plus my cats have caught mice & on the one time a rat.
And they have done a good job of keeping some foxes at bay.
We have a set near the back of our garden. I like foxes a lot but you have to admire a cat that will walk up to one swot it on the nose and see the fox run off.

A dog would go up and try and bark it out. He just went up hit the fox and sat down. (I know it's not possible for a cat to grin.... but I swear it looked like it was!)

Cats have played an important role throughout history by controlling rodent populations and thus protecting vital food supplies. This contribution was so valued by the ancient Egyptians that cats were worshiped. In the 14th century cats were valued as predators when the rat-borne Black Death struck the population of Europe. I think it is safe to say that cats have definitely earned our appreciation for their contribution.

Oh dear, I seem to have insulted a lot of people. I apologize. It was meant as a joke (I thought I was posting to FWIS ).

Actually, I did own a cat - more than once in fact. But there was never a close bond.

I believe foxes are better rat-catchers than cats.

I'm also sorry if a struck back too harshly. I've just always believed that one can make a case for something (dogs) without having to denigrate the opposition (cats). I've encountered many cat haters in my life and they often have no compunction about voicing their opinion even when they know they are speaking to a cat lover. Hurting one's feelings seems to be little concern to them. What is it about cat haters that makes them want to carry that distinction with pride?
