A few words for the wise this season, from a Postal Employee
1. Get your mailing done this week. If you don't get your cards and packages out before next Monday, your chances of on-time delivery are reduced due to the high volume of mail as compared to normal operations.
2. a) Avoid the dark green and dark red envelopes for your cards, especially if you use a dark ink for your addresses. The post office tries to sort it's mail by computer interpretation of scanned images. Low contrast between the address and envelope hampers the image taking process and can result in your mail being delayed.
b) If you can, use computer generated labels for your addresses. Handwriting is much more difficult for the computer to interpret. There are some attractive fonts that can be used that will still allow the computer to interpret the address. Just about any of the TT fonts in Word or Wordperfect will work better than handwritten addresses.
3. Please don't send hard candy, jewelry, writing utensils, or similar objects in your letter mail. The Post Office uses high speed automated sorting machines for letter mail. Objects such as those cause stoppage of mail flow and damage to your and other people's mail. If you're sending such items please send them in a padded envelope or by priority mail.
4. Please don't send alcohol, fireworks or other similar hazardous materials through the mail. It's a federal crime.
Enjoy the holidays
