Default 2004-2005 Haggis Hunt Announced

"...This season we are kindly sponsored by Balblair Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky and Walkers Shortbread who have provided many of the prizes. Our Grand Prize of a two night luxury break has been provided by the Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire..."

What is a haggis?
"...The haggis is considered a great delicacy in Scotland, and as many of your compatriots will tell you, it tastes great - many visitors from the US have been known to ask for second helpings of haggis!...The lifespan of the Haggis is again an unknown quantity, but from taggings done in the Victorian era, we know that some haggis live for well over 100 years."

It's simple really.... Haggi (the plural) have their left legs longer than their right, to allow them to run clockwise round hills. Simply get an attractive mechanical haggis with it's right legs longer than the left, and set it loose anticlockwise round the hill of you choice. The haggi will then see the attractive mechanical haggis going in the opposite direction, and when they turn round to chase after it to have their little haggis way, they will over balance (due to high centre of gravity) and tumble down the hill. You stand at the bottom of the hill with a big net, and collect the spoils.....

Your ex-patriate Scottish correspondant,

John

I got a video out of the library for my son..an American film called 'Prehisteria 3' in which a girl attempted to make herself Scottish.

She served up 'haggis' to her friends, which in the film was just a disgusting looking stwe.

You would have thought the film makers would have done their research better than that.

only a desperate man would eat Haggis, it's one of those meals invented by people who couldn't afford the good meat but had plenty of offal and oats.

Address to a Haggis Robert Burns, 1786.

Whilst the haggis can live to a ripe old age they are much better taken young. They are secretive and few have been photographed in the wild but their spoor are to be anywhere near a golf course. Gleneagles, being a famous course (almost as famous as the St. Andrews Old Couse) is renowned for the haggis spoor which are often confused with golf balls. Haggis spoor do however have a tendancy to slice badly so if you find one it is better swop it surreptiously with one of your competitors balls. Great care needs to be taken though because if you are caught out your card will be marked and the game forfiet.

I love people claiming they've seen Haggis in the wild on their visit to Scotland, and even claim they indeed walk the hills clockwise beautiful story.

Oi! Haggis is great to eat. Spurned by those who don't like their food to taste of anything!

Cheers
John

Don't forget the broon sos. Essential for haggis enjoyment.

The thing is "proper" Embra chippie sauce isn't HP brown sauce, it's thinned down with vinegar, I think, and is truely manna from heaven when poured on a haggis supper around 2am.....

But yes, point taken.

Cheers
John

I am all for taste but would rather have something that isn't made from the leftovers.

It isn't leftovers, we are so rich up here we throw away all the steak and keep the good bits.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm chippie sauce. Ideal for fried haggis, broon sos for boiled.

http://www.smart.net/~tak/haggis.html

I love the disclaimer. The dozen recipes are sorted by "increased use of animal parts that would normally be thrown away." Maybe I'll try the americanized version next month on Burns night.

See what I mean, all the bits left over.

Do you notice how Offal is never called by its proper name? I suppose it's to make it sound more appetising. Bag, Lights, Sweetbreads, Brawn, Tripe etc.

If you ever saw how a cows stomach is split, emptied and then bleached in lime to make it presentable you would never touch tripe!
