Default Highway Robbery

Anyone noticed a slight spike in the price of gasoline in their area?

Here in N MS it's averaging $2.29 for 87 octane, $2.39 for 89, and $2.49 for 93, with a number of stations trying to upset the 10 cent rule by charging $2.51 for 93.

The old mountain bike needs to be dusted off for short local trips.

Last time I was in the Chicago area the prices were about 30 cents per gallon higher than here, which would mean that now the price for 93 in the Windy City must be approaching $3.00 a gallon.

Anyone's prices top these? :x

They're over $7 (£4) per galon in the UK.

Heh, I went home to Oregon over Spring Break, where the prices were ~2.13/gal, after seeing prices here stay below $2. I got back a week later, the prices were the same here, and they've since gone up to ~$2.25! Makes me glad I don't own a car.

Yesterday I filled up for AU$1.18 per litre.

Now, 1 gallon = 3.79 litres, so that's AU$4.47 per gallon

Convert to US$ = approx $3.49 per gallon

Convert to £ = approx £1.88 per gallon

I suppose things could be worse, but I still don't like it!

correction edit!

I paid $2.15 USD for regular unleaded the other day, and that's at one of the cheaper stations, not Texaco, Shell, et al. I'm glad my VW requires regular unleaded. I have never paid close to this amount in the 12 years I've been in Houston. I liked it when my tank was $14.00 USD to fill up, now it's a bit over $28.00 USD.

They always raise it pre-summer, but this is ridiculous. The last time gas prices went high here in Houston, the Houston Chronicle, for instance, raised their subscription rates, "due to transportation/delivery costs, because of the increase in fuel." When the gas prices went down, did my subscription rate go down? Of course not. Now the airlines are complaining too.

Well, if everyone bought Honda Civic stick-shifts, they'd get the most miles per gallon. Let's see what other consumer prices go up because of this.

Near my house in CA, the gas price has risen to roughly $2.80 per gallon. I have a Dodge Ram V8, so I dread getting gas now because I spend over $60.00 to fill my tank #-o .

We're in about the same shape here, $2.05 - $2.10 for 87... and yes, times like these make me miss my '88 CRX -- it was like a motorized cactus.
These days I have to feed a Vortec 5300, which is nowhere near as stingy.

Well, the price of oil did recently hit an all-time high, so what do you expect?

My coworker just filled up the tank on her Mazda 323 - US$60. I think gas is around $5 a gallon but I haven't checked prices in a while.

I live in the largest, non OPEC country in the world. Furthermore, I live in the part of that country where we dig this bounty.

Today the price is 89.9 Canadian cents per litre. A Canadian Buck is worth about .8171 cents American. At 4.54 litres per Canadian/Imperial gallons, you do the math.

At the moment I drive a 2 litre Nissan Primera Sport. . If I am cruising on a motorway at daft slow speeds (about 50) I can get it up to nearly 40 to the gallon. If I drive on the motorway at my usual speed of around 80 it goes down to 34. Pushing it along 'A' roads can take it down to 25 if I am reckless.

I used to have the V12 version of the Jaguar XJS. 5.3 litres and 350 HP. It did between 5 and 20 to the gallon depending how you were driving.

Largest as in square kilometres? Is Canada bigger than Russia (I believe Russia is no member of the OPEC)?
Or do you mean the country with the greatest oil production outside of OPEC?

Sorry. I was vague. I may be somewhat premature. There is no doubt that Canada is the largest suppler of oil to the US that is not OPEC. This position will not only hold; but, as time goes by, Canada will become an even bigger suppler in percentile.

And 3.78 litres to a US gallon.

89.9 x .8171 x 3.78 = $2.78 per US gallon.

More expensive than the US, and this is the area in Canada that produces the fuel! I think a part of it is the federal/provincial taxes though, does anyone know how much of the price is tax?

It depends on the province, but if you were to assume that 40-60% of the price of gas is taxes, then IIRC you wouldn't be far off.

The numbers are out there. I'll see if I can find you some.

[edit:] These numbers are (at least) second hand, and in an article ultimately supporting that taxation level, so take it with a grain of salt. But the breakdown looks right to me based on my recollection of other articles, slanted against the taxation level.

linky:

Quote:
In March of this year the weighted average price
of regular, unleaded gas in Canada was 72.4 cents a litre. That included
15.7 cents in provincial and municipal taxes, 10 cents of federal excise tax
and 4.7 cents of GST -- a total of 30.4 cents in tax, or 42 per cent of the
retail price.
I hope this helps.

[edit again:] It just ocurred to me to mention that both the provincial and GST tax levels are based on percentages of the gas price. The excise tax is fixed at 10 cents per liter. This ultimately means that as the price of gas goes up, the portion of the gas price that is tax ultimately goes down.

$2.39 per gallon here in Wisconsin. Everything will go up. The price of energy IS the bottom line for most businesses. Farmers will be hit hard, food prices will rise. Trucking and all other transportation will be squeezed. Nobody escapes.

BTW, diesel here is now $2.50. Remember when it used to be less than gas?

$2.39 per gallon. That's 0.82€/l. We pay (I''m not entirely sure) more than 1.20€/l. (Super 95) You've still got some slack .

Super 98 is even more expensive.
Diesel is just over 1€/l.
