We're on the suggested list, even though we've technically been sold back to the city. Figures, though- San Antonio for the longest time had four Air Force bases and Fort Sam Houston (army)

Being a sap for memorial names, I hate to see the Grissom Air Reserve Base in Bunker Hill, IN on the list. Maybe we could petition the USAF to name the consolidated reserve center in his honor.

Im a member of another message board where theres lots of military personnel. They pointed out that Iowa had three naval base closures. I know its not unusual for landlockefd areas to have naval units but it gives me a weird vision of a fleet somehow sailing across the state!

Now. all those Reps. and Senators who rant about the need for tax cuts, elimination of government waste, and the need for economy (in both parties) will be releasing heart-rending statements about the awful impact of these cuts in their states. They will also document how the security of the Nation depends on the continued operation of (name the facility) in their district.

That's what makes this a great country! When things are looking bleak (note f'rinstance the thread on UA pensions), you can always depend on Congress to provide comic relief!!

You mean like this?

Lawmakers and residents in towns with military bases targeted for closure promised Friday to fight to get off the list, saying their communities would be crippled and national security would be damaged.

That list has to be a fake.

There's no way in absolute hell they would close Eglin, Edwards, Vandenburg, and the biggest BS closing: Andrews.

Edit: Just waking up, I thought the pasted list was the same as the linked list.

That list includes all bases that are either receiving or losing any unit, even if it is only one person. The list of closings is also incomplete, since some bases, like Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, AK, are losing almost all of their units and personnel, but are not technically being closed.

I'll have to get my boyfriend to look over that list. he's Reserves here in WA, and he's got to get up really early to get to his drill the first weekend of the month. he's going to be really mad if his reserve center is closed. (he's army, but two of those army centers don't have locations listed that I saw.)

Default Re: Proposed U.S. Military Base Closings List

Ever since 1990 someone in the military command/political PTBs has had it in for southeastern Connecticut. Especially the Navy, which apparently waited until they were sure Rickover wasn't coming back from the dead before starting to dismantle what the Admiral had built there.

Keith Oberman (MSNBC-TV) just super-imposed the previous election's red state/blue state map over a map of the country's likeliest base closure/realignment locations. Red states win, blue states lose. #-o

And Alabama.

Speaking of, how intergral is Redstone Arsonal to Marshall Space Flight Center?

If they shut Redstone, what's that going to do to MSFC?

Meanwhile, in blue Hawaii:
