Default TFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ!!!

Lllllllllllllllllllllladeeez and germs, preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesenting the conclave of the year! The gathering to end all gatherings! The get-together fabled in song, story, and ancient Incan calendars! It's the Third First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' Eyeballin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q!!!

Held in conjunction with (but not necessarily with the knowledge of) the Miami Valley Astronomical Society's Apollo Rendezvous to be held in Dayton Ohio on June 10 - 11, 2005, this year's theme is "Astronomical Outreach", with lectures by Scott Roberts (VP National Sales, Meade Instruments), Scott Ireland (computer photo processing), and Terry Mann (VP, Astronomical League).

The telescope fair is back, for homemade scopes or commercial scopes with some form of modification. The vendors will be there to insure you don't have to carry around any excess weight in the form of spare cash. Food and Drink will be available (order box lunches in advance -- see website above), or see the scout troops and Friends of the Museum who will help you stave off the munchies.

And of course, it's the site of the TFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ, the Saturday evening StarGaze and BBQ at the Association's dark sky observatory at John Bryan State Park (picture of facility) , northeast of Yellow Springs, OH (.pdf map). Naturlich, us BABBlers In Residence (such as Russ, Bob B., and Charlie in Dayton) will be lurking, clogging our arteries with burgers'n'brats, so c'mon up and shake our greasy hands...

There are motels within spittin' distance in Yellow Springs, and within a stone's throw in Springfield. For the adventurous, there's camping available at the park (see the park's website for details).

So come one, come all, tell your stories, spend your money, scratch them chigger bites, and enjoy the best astro-entertainment that the Buckeye State has to offer! It's the Third First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' Eyeballin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q!!!

NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE BABB IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN THE AUTHOR'S FEVERED IMAGINATION...

Man, that was a LOT of work on those colors! Not to mention the acronym. Here I thought those fellows supporting Barbershop Quartets had devised a long one.

If ya don't mind me askin', what kind a BBQ would ya being servin', son? Honey-mustard, tomato-based, wet, dry, basic smoked with crackers? These are important questions to BBQers, folks!

Plus then there's that astro stuff, through all the delicious smoke!

Well, us buckeye types use the acronym BBQ to refer to just about anything cooked out-of-doors over a real fire, as opposed to an electrical burner...so I suppose you'll find folk around here who could lay legitimate claim to having BBQ'ed a marshmallow over a trash fire...

That being said, though, the grills come out of the woodwork for this'n, and there's a notable shrinkage in neighborhood piles of apple and cherry wood, not to mention the extra supplies of mesquite-based charcoal that have to be trucked in...there are numerous homemade sauces floatin' around...most everyone who takes this semi-seriously brings 2x what they think they'll need for their stuff, plus an extra quantity for sharin'...we got the types who take it sans sauce, and the types who'll eat something prompt first aid would have saved...what we cook varies as to taste, too...it's mostly bring-yer-own, and some of the stuff I've seen slapped on the grill out there would defy The Major Midwestern Metropolitan College Of Higher Knowledge's biology department's ability to classify...but don't it cook up good...there's burgers, and numerous varieties of sausages, with the odd chicken part thrown in for the health conscious...someday I'm gonna get off the proveribial duff and whip up a stack of blue-cheese stuffed cheeseburgers...fourple yum...

A real old-fashioned Texas-style cow-on-a-slow-spit three day barbecue over coals? Around here? Get real...I remember a couple of years ago, when the boys tried to light a campfire out back, it took six stargazers, three or four road flares, two cans of charcoal lighter, all the spare gas for the lawn mower, and a leaf blower...you could say we ain't real up on our survival skills around here...

I wish I could come up there and help out with the whole Texas-style campfire and stuff, but unfortunately I will be working and it is a little far.

About 600 km, as the crow flies.

It's Cleveland +4 hours. It's 3.5 if you're lucky avoiding the Royal Ohio Mounted Police. So that'd be ~7 hours give or take the amount of lead in your foot.

Charlie,
I'd love to come, but:
1) It's a little far from "Deep in the Heart of Texas".
2) It's two weeks after the end of my vacation (give me a little more lead time next year).

I'm gonna try to put on my schedule. It will motivate me to finish my really, really amateur telescope (8" Newtownian with a cast iron mount).

Well, I just checked, and it looks about twice as far away as Indy from me. (~4 hrs). Unfortunately, I think my summer class starts that Monday, and I don't have any wheeled and motorized transportation of my own. Sounds like a great time, but I'm not sure if I can make it.

Candy's drive would be just about the same, looking at the map, so maybe she can represent those of us from Ill.

Candy works for United Airlines. She probably flies to the grocery store. I'm sure she'd fly to Dayton.

I think I said or did something to make Candy mad at me. She hasn't responded to any of my latest posts and I don't think she planning to come to the Apollo Rendezvous. ops:

Sorry Candy! What did I say or do????

(I thought I'd responded to this comment already. Guess not. That's what happens around finals.)
I still need transportation, but I'll try to see if that can be arranged. Someone in the department ought to be up for such a roadtrip.

Don't kill yourself to get down here. I just thought it might be a good weekend jaunt for you. Since Saturday would be the better day for things to see and do, you should probably stay up yonder and play with you mom.

We'll get ya later.

Well, now you make me want to come more! Mom has a set of keys to my place. This might work out perfect. She can feed my cat.

Off to work I go.
