OK, I'm no expert, but I'm gonna take a wild guess...

1. Atlas
2. Thor
3. Nike

We sure did go for those Greek and Norse gods in our missile program, didn't we?

Really nice photographs, BTW. Did you find enough time to see everything as thoroughly as you wished?

Yeah we did, it's not really as big as we expected and since we had a whole day we covered it all. I do wish I had taken more photos though. Unfortunately I only had the one battery and I didn't know if it would last and since it was early on in my trip I didn't want to run the battery out, I found out too late that it would have lasted, so...

I do have photos of the B-47 and of both Dawn and me in a B-47 cockpit, as well as a British Vulcan and a few other planes. I was quite awed by the whole place and recommend it to anyone that likes planes.

The two warnings I'd give are wear VERY comfortable shoes, it's a lot of walking, and don't, -DON'T- eat lunch BEFORE going on the flight simulator.

It is indeed the Goblin, one of only two prototypes ever built. They were designed as a parasite fighter for the B-47 and were slung in the bomb bay. The idea was that if the bomber was ever attacked, the Goblin could be released to engage the enemy fighters and then once the battle was over they would reattach into the bomb bay. A great idea that nearly worked. Unfortunately due to the serve turbulance about the B-47 as it flew, though the Goblin could dettach and fly by itself, redocking proved impossible and so the project was scraped leaving the only two planes that where ever built as the solo members of this project.

Actually, it was the B-36. I'm not aware of any tests with the Goblin and the B-47. Yes, I have been known to read aviation books for breakfast. Thanks for asking...

Yes, you are right, it wasn't the B-47. It wasn't the B-36 either though, it was the B-52.

Negative. It was intended to be used with the B-36. The test program was conducted with a B-29.

Here's several sites listing it as a parasite fighter for the B-36:
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/air_power/ap38.htm
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/air_power/xf85t.htm
http://www.air-and-space.com/goblins.htm
http://www.edwards.af.mil/history/do...ge_planes.html (scroll down)
http://www.unrealaircraft.com/forever/mcd_xf85_gob.php

I can't find anything linking it to the B-52. In fact, the first flight of the Goblin was before the jet-engine B-52 was ordered by the Air Force, and 6 years before the first flight of that bomber.

Hmmm, so I see. Okay. I'll admit to not being able to recall all the info it had on its board, but it was displayed with the B-52 (as you can see in the bckground of the photo) so I was assuming it was that (yeah I got my B's confused earlier.) There is a B-36 there too, but a winglength away from this display so it seemed that the Goblin was with the B-52 not the B-36.

The aircraft in the background of the photo you supplied is not a B-52. In fact, B-36 appears to be more likely, judging from the shape of the fuselage and the intake duct for one of the pusher engines.

Rockwell XFV-12 from the 70's. It was supposed to become the next generation supersonic V/STOL fighter for the Navy.

Unfortunately it never flew.

It doesn't look like a B-52 to me either. Here is a B-52:

http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/bo...52h-99071b.jpg

The body shape and wing attachment doesn't look the same.

Here is a B-36:

Note that the air intakes on the leading edge of the wing (bottom photo) looks a lot like PhantomWolf's photograph.
