Maybe the whole idea of personed space flight will be retired as an expensive folly.

There are other spending priorities, such as hospitals, schools, overseas aid and senators personal pork barrel projects

Will discovery ever lift off?

Gee, what an unusual post for you, Sticks!

Now, just how much of that funding removed from the NASA budget will wind up helping with hospitals and schools in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Whoops, wait a minute, I wrote too soon. "overseas aid": a-ha!

If it makes you feel any better, your sadness has been experienced by many, many other BABB posters, myself included, as well as ToSeek himself!

BTW, always wanted to ask, what's a "bumble_puppy"? Something that's indigenous to Canada or Britain? Never heard of such down here in the States. Does it have to do with Huxley's Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy?

Hubble (launch/upgrades), other satellite repairs and retrivals, Chandra, Magellan, Galileo, Ulysses, multiple Spacelab, Spacehab and Mir missions, first untethered spacewalk, lots of Get Away Specials, Tracking and Data Relay Satellites, first US woman in space, first civilians in space, John Glenn back to space, numerous other satellites launched...

one reference

It certainly made me feel good and proud.
It's not an accountants' answer, but it was (is) worth it to me.

These days we need more real, human answers as opposed to accountant's answers.

OMB accountants (and their bosses/lackeys) are what crippled the shuttle and the post-Apollo space program right from the outset.

I wonder if this means the old Launch Umbilical tower has new life for HLLV--or will it be new?

I'd be OK with a hiatus if that's what it would take to regroup, rethink, and retool. We need a truly global effort, with proper funding. Bad timing with the current political climate too.

But eventually, we do have to move on - unless we are relegated to the position that when Earth becomes uninhabitable our species comes to an end. Sure it's a long way off, but you don't want to wait until there are only a couple hundred million years left before you get started.

so if one goes down every 5 flight we'll have non left at the end and they need to build something new...

Hope they are unmanned then, would be a shame to for more astronouts to die.
