I think that, even if it's just for prosperities sake, that we should make a list of everything unique to BABB: In jokes, Personalities, Ranks, Acronyms, ie. Everything that we can think of etc...

I'll update this post with new suggestions, and it'll probably end up pretty big. That's the aim anyway.

Here are some ideas for starters.

Games
  • Word games
Love 'em? Hate 'em? Well here they are
Word Association Game
AKA WAG. Created by mainframes, he o[buessly has no idea of what a monster he had unleashed.
The acronym game
Started by mickal555, is considered to need greater thought than the wag so isn't despised of as much.
[b]Person Above You: "Houston, we are go for launch!"
Display's spurts of activity then gradually dies...
Henceforth you shall be known as Darth... erm...
Jason Thompson's fun thread Sustained the WAGers while BABBling was locked.

  • Quizzes
For those who want more thought for their buck
The ULTIMATE astronomy quiz
Greated by Glom after the fall of the first appolo quiz. First person asks a question and whoever gets in right gets to ask the next question(in theory).
The Astronomical Numbers game
By jfribrg. Rules: Each post states the next natural number in sequence, along with an astronomy/space flight connection. As the numbers get larger it gets more difficult.
New Apollo Quiz Game
Greated by PhantomWolf after the fall of the first appolo quiz. Rules:
Answer the previous question (preferably with a link) and if it is called correct by the OP of the question, or seconded as correct by one of our resident Apollo nuts (Jay and Bob) then you post the next question.
Sci-fi + Space Quote contest.
G99 Humphrey: One person will submit a quote from any mainstream sci-fi or space movie (had to of been in the theaters). Whoever is correct gets to ask the next question.
Sci-fi literary quote contest
ToSeek: One person will submit a quote from any Literary source. Whoever is correct gets to ask the next question.

Definitions/Explanations

Kilopi
Due to an trend with the word pi a few years back, a poster by the name of Grapes of Wrath decided to change his name at 3142 posts. The term Kilopi was adopted. Kilo= 1000 pi= 3.14... thus Kilopi=3142

The Incarnations follow:

Kilopi: who retired at 3141
mili360: needs explanation
A Thousand Pardons: needs explanation
hhEb09'1: the metric conversion of a mile, upside-down (1.609344 km), yes we do think he's going a bit senile...

When you reach Kilopi it is a reason to celebrate, and you may even get your own thread. Although most people keep their name, a few have decided to change:

Ut: Is now Kristophe
g99: Refers to the floor of not sureand year of graduation of the posters collage, g99 has kilopi'd to the name of a pet turtle, Humphrey. Who is bent on world domination.
mickal555: Decided to keep going as mickal555 but changed to mickal666 for 1 post- to honor the Kilopi.

There is a photo album of people who've gone Kilopi here* It's gone???

ELEGY WRITTEN IN A BABB POST

The curfew tolls the knell of the parting board,
The lowing poster winds slowly o'er the lea;
The BABBer over final posts has poured,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.

Now fades the glimmering landscape of the BABB,
And on all the net, a solemn stillness holds,
Save where BABBlers wheel their droning gab,
And drowsy keyboard tinklings lull the distant folds.

Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tower,
The BA does to the moon not complain,
Of such as, wandering near his secret bower,
Molest his ancient solitary reign.

Beneath those rugged fora, under ToSeek's shade,
Where heave BABB posts in many a mouldering heap,
Each in his earnest cell for ever laid,
The rude denisens of the BABB do sleep.

The breezy call of ether-breathing dew,
The unsturdy teetering of the idea under test,
Logic's shrill clarion, or the echoing review,
No more shall rouse them from their lowly rest.

For them no more, blazing PX shall burn,
Or busy posters ply the word association game;
No ATMs run on, forever to return,
Or climb by picture a Mons, its slopes to tame.

Oft did the woowoos to their logic yield,
Their comments oft the stubborn HB broke;
How jocund did they drive their science afield!
How bow'd the CTs beneath their sturdy stroke!

Let not GLP mock their useful toil,
Their homely joys, and destiny obscure;
Nor NASAScam smear with a disdainful smile
The short and simple annals of the pure.

The boast of authority, the pomp of the hoaxer,
And all that superstition e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable to the HB coaxer;
The paths of antiscience appeal only to the depraved.

Yet e'en these posts from insult to protect,
Some frail memorial need be erected nigh,
With uncouth rhymes and well-shaped mirrors deck'd,
Imploring the passing tribute of a sigh.

Their names, their posts, spelt by th' starry Muse,
The place of fame and debate supply;
And many an astronomy text around she strews,
That teach the newbie how to see the sky.

The Epitaph

Here rests the BABB upon the Inet's Earth,
A youth to Fortune and to Fame an unknown one.
Fair Science frowned not on its humble birth,
But mergers marked it soon to be gone.

By Maksutov

That was so dang pretty.

From whence can come a reply to this lament?
For after much crying, , my strength is spent
Nevermore, nevermore
came the daunting woe from the crow
For our past is nearly lore
As it is time for us to go

Hark, do I hear a "Dagnabit"
It sounds like the BA, our Abbit
"Metamorphsis" I think I hear him say
Must be time for all of us to change
For a new dawn that is on the way
And we can now extend our range

Arise us silky, sullen, son-of-a-guns
No more weeping, that ain't no fun
Surely this board has a right to grow =D>
yet, there is still that old crow.

Rime of the Physics Student

It’s late at night, my mind is weary,
Eyes are bloodshot, vision’s bleary,
I know not what I’m really thinking,
My sanity’s surely winking.
Yet I stay up for I am not done,
With homework for P121.

My mind’s back from temporary lull,
And contemplates a bouncing ball,
Then reason shouts out, with great diction,
“Idiot! You forgot friction!”
So I cross out numbers written there
And hang my head in great despair.

I am at a loss and panicked too
Because I don’t know what to do!
I factor out “t,” I integrate,
But the mistakes do not abate.
I feel like a failure and a fool…
What’s life like in the business school?

But I see through that confusing mist,
After all I’m a physicist!
I know the movements of block and book
Using Laws from Newton and Hooke,
I know a bowling ball’s energy
Based on its squared velocity.

I now see myself years down the line
Where physics glory is all mine,
The secret of dark matter I know
Having found the neutrelino.
My proof is so clear and it’s so bold
I win myself some Swedish gold!

But as I start my acceptance speech,
I hear a harshly ringing screech.
A startling thought to my mind does creep:
Oh my God I’ve fallen asleep!
It’s eight in the morn, not late at one
And my damned homework’s still not done!

I stare at my paper with a frown
And jot some garbled numbers down,
And before I can think any more
It’s in my bag; I’m out the door,
And as I’m walking I pray my best
That problem won’t be on the test!

Christmas

My Christmas was not merry, no it was not.
With dry turkey, sloppy greens
and a gravy like snot.
But tonight I returned home
and what did I see?
A real Christmas goose
cooked by my housemate
and offered to me.
And with Boddington's Ale left by a guest,
I warmed my insides with only the best.
So with a fatty bird,
a good beer
and a dressing done right,
I bid you all a Merry Christmas
and to me a good night.

To the BABBers:

May the wonders of the heavens continue to inspire
folks like yourselves, people I admire,
Such as, galaxies and dark matter which stir your minds
and how the planets behave (but no fear when they align!),
Continue the :-? and , the "ahhs" and the "ooohs"
from Hubble and Spitzer, to name but a few,
producing wonderful images - magnificent views

May your work reveal your wisdom, though ya'll do make me dizzy,
your study of SR and GR go relatively easy,
May the posts be articulate and the puns diminish - (wink)

And your evidence prove the sun's not "peachy pink"!
And let us not forget our own "Dr. Phil", our BA
Who has brought us here in a kindly & scientific way
[Where we can hear things like..."The Beagle has landed", hopefully, today. Edit
That would have been nice. Of course, they still deserve some credit. [-( ]

I hope your Christmas was grand, and your presents delightful
a reprieve from debunking all those things feared frightful
New Year's partys are next, though we are not quite at perihelion
(you'll ignore that point if you're dressed as a cameleon)
May you have many, many laughs, in number at least a million.

Then back you'll come to discuss what's been posted
Hopefully, your conclusions will be toasted and rarely roasted
So much is happening and in so many places
Water signs on Mars and all those faces
Yeah hah, Huygens probe will soon go through it's paces

Yep, much is coming dead ahead
So, think of some of what I've said
your posts will likely make me wiser each day
Thanks to you, I've learned much of the astronomy way
Hmmmm, in fact, you think I could "advance place" BA?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

You sure it shouldn't be...defies explanation.

Other culutural aspects....wow, there's so much.
There is the Babber support I've received with the invention of a new kind of solar instrument (SPACC and SAD). Where else could I have found support?
There are a BadAstronomy poems around here (Andromeda did one)

What happens when someone asks if .999...=1? Will the very fabric of the space-time continuum rip? Did I even spell 'continuum' right?

Itc sommon knoledge that all mathematicians have been denying the ture nasture of the universe for a bery long time. 1 is not a single digit but a round off number consisting of 0.9999999999........99999999x10E^99. But for simplicity sake they rounded it off to one.
Don;t ask about the true value of Pi. Its a long story filled with death, corruption, and a few McDonalds happy meals.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

Speaking of her, she's our child prodigy growing up around here and looking sharp, thanks to all of our help, of course.

[hold for a tear 'cause I think I'm gonna cry.. ]

Time for an Ode? [needs expression]
ELEGY WRITTEN IN A BABB POST

The curfew tolls the knell of the parting board,
The lowing poster winds slowly o'er the lea;
The BABBer over final posts has poured,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.

Now fades the glimmering landscape of the BABB,
And on all the net, a solemn stillness holds,
Save where BABBlers wheel their droning gab,
And drowsy keyboard tinklings lull the distant folds.

Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tower,
The BA does to the moon not complain,
Of such as, wandering near his secret bower,
Molest his ancient solitary reign.

Beneath those rugged fora, under ToSeek's shade,
Where heave BABB posts in many a mouldering heap,
Each in his earnest cell for ever laid,
The rude denisens of the BABB do sleep.

The breezy call of ether-breathing dew,
The unsturdy teetering of the idea under test,
Logic's shrill clarion, or the echoing review,
No more shall rouse them from their lowly rest.

For them no more, blazing PX shall burn,
Or busy posters ply the word association game;
No ATMs run on, forever to return,
Or climb by picture a Mons, its slopes to tame.

Oft did the woowoos to their logic yield,
Their comments oft the stubborn HB broke;
How jocund did they drive their science afield!
How bow'd the CTs beneath their sturdy stroke!

Let not GLP mock their useful toil,
Their homely joys, and destiny obscure;
Nor NASAScam smear with a disdainful smile
The short and simple annals of the pure.

The boast of authority, the pomp of the hoaxer,
And all that superstition e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable to the HB coaxer;
The paths of antiscience appeal only to the depraved.

Yet e'en these posts from insult to protect,
Some frail memorial need be erected nigh,
With uncouth rhymes and well-shaped mirrors deck'd,
Imploring the passing tribute of a sigh.

Their names, their posts, spelt by th' starry Muse,
The place of fame and debate supply;

As long as we're talking about poems, we might as well mention NZBornGal's Solar System musical.

[edit: That was so dang perrrtty. ]

From whence can come a reply to this lament?
For after much crying, , my strength is spent
Nevermore, nevermore
came the daunting woe from the crow
For our past is nearly lore
As it is time for us to go

Hark, do I hear a "Dagnabit"
It sounds like the BA, our Abbit
"Metamorphsis" I think I hear him say
Must be time for all of us to change
For a new dawn that is on the way
And we can now extend our range

Arise us silky, sullen, son-of-a-guns
No more weeping, that ain't no fun
Surely this board has a right to grow =D>
yet, there is still that old crow.

Very nice bits. Sure, the core of the BABB will be back, but you can't help but feel a bit nostalgic.

Please don't forget: Last one out, turn off the lights! :-({|=
