While collecting water in the boredom bucket at home watching repeats on ukhistory of Jeremy Clarkson’s attempt to sway the public to vote for brunel to be the greatest Briton of all time, a thought sprang to my beer flooded mind.
Who is the greatest person to ever walk this earth?
Unlike the greatest Briton, the world’s greatest person has to have done something so magnificent that he/she changed the world and everyone in it. Sure Churchill was a great man, and done our country proud, as did brunel (and can you believe it) Dianna, the runners up, but did they ever change the world? Churchill brought us to victory, in the air, sea and beaches but they didn’t do many favours for Germany! Lincoln (who I believe won a similar context in America) hasn’t done much in the way of improving my life.
So who’s it going to be? my vote would go to:

Martin Luther King- he changed our way of life forever by enforcing the rights every man, women and child on this planet should have and in the end died for his beliefs.
or
Newton- as an astronomical site, and a person who’s out with the scope every night, I personally believe he has done a lot for me. Knowing the physics behind what I’m seeing helps me sleep a lot better at night, but saying that probably hasn’t changed everyone’s world.
 :P B) <_<   h34r:

Neither the credibility of historians nor the acuity of our minds nor both jointly is capable of accurately judging to select a viable candidate. Also, the vicissitudes of the definition of greatness and the prohibition of discussing religion add further difficulties.

If I had sufficient self esteem I might nominate the person who invented spinning thread out of short fibers. Impressive!!!

Probably Wilma. Fred would have screwed it up.

I amy be acting a little patriotic here, but I say that one of the the greatest men in history is Mahatma Gandhi.
He despsed violence, and was one of the most insightful man in history.

My candidate for The greatest person in history.

what abt Copernicus....don't u think if he had not been there...we all would not been here discussing all this....

and even Galileo will do...

presently i am reading a play "The Life of Galileo" by Bertolt Brecht
a good reading..though it potrays a little bit different image of galileo from what he is believed to be...

"In the year sixteen hundred and nine
Science's light began to shine
At Padua City, in a modest house
Galileo Galilei set out to prove
The sun is still, the earth is on the move"

I usually get crap for saying this, but Marilyn Manson is the greatest. The man's a literary genius, his message challenges the current societal inertia, and he's constantly stood up for the underdog.

That's all very honorable, Devilmech, but his music SUX!!! (Ha ha, sorry! )

On that note, tho', I might take a daring controversial leap here and nominate Anton LaVey!!! I find his ideas humorous...and spot on.

I have trouble deciding because there are so many people worthy, how do you choose between them?

It wouldn't surprise me if the gods are up there, playing dice, chuckling away because the greatest person in history is actually an unknown person who was never recognised by the population as a whole and slipped through his/her remarkable life unnoticed!

I'd say it's a tie between:
Ghandi
Einstein
Galileo
Copernicus
and... Fraser!

Deciding who's the greatest person in world history , as i regard it , seems hard and kinda unfair as humanity witnessed thousands and thousands of great people with their indefatigable dedication and comittment.

My list:
1. Prophets : Moses , Jesus and Mohammad... peace and blessings be upon them all

2. All Scientists and Scholars....
Copernicus, Newton ....etc. And Albert Einestien as he's more than a Scientist
"the ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the marytyr"

3.Mothers... The bottomless well of sacrifice and love

4. Any person with a belief or an honourable goal .... to which he's willing to sacrifice his soul for it...

May peace be upon u all,
Ola
