The photo of the jellyfish is indeed the right way up. They are quite unusual I think. They had several tanks of exotic varieties at Osaka aquarium. Originally I took a larger photo and cropped it, the reason being that the large one showed the edge of the tank and a tiny bit of reflection in the glass. I'm Glad you liked the pics. There are 525 more where those came from!

This is about all I can come up with right now, ha. My mum found this pic recently & emailed it over to me. I have to scan some more recent stuff...bit of a hassle, coz I don't have a scanner! (Needless to say, I look (and dress) a bit different these days!). :P

Spacemad, Thanks for the comment. That was indeed a cutout of in front of the butterfly house in Callaway Gardens in Warm Springs, Georgia(US). It is also the home of Victory Garden (South), they have a TV show on Public Television that highlights gardening and cooking(with foods from the gardens).
And Kashi's photos are great, aren't they! They should be on a site. Damienpaul, When did that brushfire happen, did the observatory get rebuilt? I think of observatories as huge impervious metal shells on top of concrete walls. I wonder if sprinklers fed by a storage cistern could have helped. I have read of metal buildings being cooled by light misting at intervals during the day, the evaporative cooling effect is like air conditioning. On an observatory, one might have to be orient the misters correctly so humidity wasn't a problem for the scope. And the large shape of the dome is a natural for a rainwater collection system to keep the cistern topped off. Whoops, did I just segue from a tragic scientific loss to an analysis on energy efficiency, conservation and sharing the water collection/distribution system with fire protection strategies? ![]()

Jimmy, I'm not Dippy, and I've got a Macintosh, not a PC.
However, if you have some kind of graphics program, and your picture is open on your screen, usually you can choose to save as...and select .jpg as the option. On a Mac, it would be menu select > File > Save As > type in new name if you want > select .jpg Good Luck! Damienpaul, I've used materials for making kilns called Castables. They are refractory grade products which mix like concrete and are made for different temperature ranges, some can withstand 2000°C. That might be something to slather buildings with, kinda like stucco, for fire protection.

Okay, honestly, here I am... As you can see, the resemblance between me and Superman is quite startling...
Zod, I work nights, which is where and when I post in here LOL BTW, I live in Luton, not London :P Maybe you'd like to step into my Arctic Ice Palace and we can discuss it further? ![]()

I agree with you, Damienpaul, so, what about it Kashi, as Iīm not the only one who liked your photos? Do you have a website? If not do you have an account with Yahoo! (if not itīs a simple matter to open one) as on My Yahoo you can have an on-line photo album that others could look at. I have many photos of space there that Iīve collected on my travels around the Internet. You can have a private album that only you can see & another thatīs open to all those you give your address to. If you are interested I can send you the address sometime & you can have a look at the on-line album.I have never got round to making a website for myself, as much as I would like to - Iīm just too lazy to get round to doing it! :P Perhaps this summer? Who knows?! Meanwhile, hereīs another of my wife & I on the River Cam, in one of the flat bottomed punts that students use to take tourists around Cambridge on the river. It was taken in August last year. B)

Chook, the filesize (in K) depends on the dimensions of the image (eg, 640 by 480 pixels) and the quality of the image (can't remember how that's determined but it might be because of the number of dots per inch - dpi)
Yours is probably saved at 100% quality, so even though it's dimensions are quite small, it's filesize is quite large. Yours is 170 by 244 pixels and 44K... mine is 644 by 484 and 18K because the quality is something like 70%. Lowering the image quality by just 30% causes a huge reduction in filesize without losing any visible picture quality. You'll need some image processing software to reduce the quality (and therefore the file size) - you don't need to pay out for something flash like Photoshop - there are some freeware applications online you can download that won't cost you a penny. I don't know any off the top of my head though but if you're interested, let me know and I'll see what I can find out. The reason photos are normally saved at 100% quality by default is because you get the full benefit of it when you go to print your photo on nice shiny glossy paper. If you're looking to enlarge the photo too, the higher the original quality the better. I suspect Kashi might be able to explain this better than me LOL

Thanks for all of your encouragement guys! At the moment I don't really have enough time to upload all of my photos to a website. I'm too busy with uni etc. If I have some spare time over the next few weeks I might upload a few more to a simple little page somewhere. I was actually using my father's camera to take those photos, but I intend to purchase my own digital camera later in the year. I'm looking at the Konica Minolta G600, which is released in May. Once I buy my own camera I might start a photography site which would run along side my web development business site (www.ideascape.com.au) if time permits.
With regards to what DippyHippy was saying about filesize: All .jpg and .jpeg image files are compressed using the JPEG compression algorithm. Unfortunately some loss in quality results, although the file size is dramatically reduced from an uncompressed TIF or Bitmap image. The 70% or 100% quality that you were referring to is to do with the amount of compression. "100%" quality saves the file using the minimum possible compression (although some quality will still be lost). The lower the "quality" the more compression. You can see grainy distortion on some pictures that are too compressed. I use the maximum quality setting when saving pictures for print (and a much higher resolution), however for uploading to the web 80-85% is a good amount. The difference in file size between 95% and 100% might be double, whereas between 85% and 95% the difference would be minimal (i.e. the relationship between compression and filesize is not linear). If you want more information on this sort of thing do a google search for "JPEG compression algorithm". Compression is a very interesting area of computer science.

Spacemad,
nice, relaxing picture, where is it? Galaxygirl,(whistle)! Dips, you too (no, not whistle), nice pic. Didn't you have one of you and your girl a few months ago, when you were in the U.S?
