Star Trek TNG first aired in the late 1980's. When AIDS was new and gay people were persecuted. One episode of TNG dealt with the subject of sexuality. The Enterprise was helping planet where all the people were androgenous; they had no gender. A person who had feelings as a male or female was considered an abomination and must submit to rather radical brain fix. I thought it was a very thought provoking show. Much of the audience was male viewers. I think this was Star Trek's attempt to show the homophobic heterosexual male population here that sexual preference does not matter. American males have become more tolerant though I'm sure it wasn't because of the show, but maybe it opened their minds just a little.

Thanks for posting the links to the Startrek pages, Josh. I spent the best part of the morning following link after link & remembering episodes half forgotten - I even forgot to continue reading the postings in the forum!!!!

I did do a search on Startrek some months ago - when the lastest film was about to be released here in England - but I forgot to save them in My Favourites - I havenīt been back since then! (shortly thereafter I began to add posts to the forum for the first time! :P ).

I particularly like the Voyager series. I sometimes wonder why - I can only think it must be because I admire Captain Janeway - such a forceful, strong willed woman, obsessed with getting her ship & crew safely home - yet often full of doubts whether what she is doing is the right thing. (I often feel the same way! )

I haven't looked at this topic for awhile, so pardon my revisiting parts

Yes Josh, they did do an episode where they discussed their reason for the ability of species to procreate. I even mentioned that episode in another post I made somewhere in the forum.

Course I suggested that maybe humans where the "primary" race--that is we are the ones who came come into an empty cosmos & will be the ones to seed the oceans of distant planets.

Ok I don;t really believe that, but it makes for an interesting discussion, yes?

I personally like DS9 the best. I really get a charge out of Quark's discreption of "huuumaans"! ANd the series of pictures of the Vulcan T'Pal--hell yea, I'd be willing to try to procreate, even if it didn't turn out No chipanze that one hey

Also 7 of 9--her discovery of her humanity is really well done in the Voyager series, in my opinion. She has no concept of herself when she begins, and I think it is excellent the way the writers have her discover herself.

I agree, Duane, with that last statement about 7 of 9. I just think it's unfortunate they had to make a sex symbol out of her to include her in the series.

Really clever how she is all these things, and yet retains her femininity.

I don't know if any of you are familiar with the Wikipedia Web Project? But their feature article is on Star Trek

The Star Trek entry

Interesting towards the end with the Prequel versus 11 movie debate about the future of the series. It is itnteresting to note the intiatial failure of TOS on TV till it was syndicated, I hope history repeats itself with Enterprise.

The Main Page of the encyclopedia.

Okay thanks, but what is the animated series? I don't think I've ever heard about that one. Making just one 'cartoon' series doesn't make any sense.

My favorite movie was the one where they come back to Earth to save the whales.

I didn't know there was an animated series till I read the post I've quoted!

Has it ever been shown here in England? I saw many of the Star Trek programmes while I lived in Spain - but I hadnīt seen TSG till I returned to England 3 years ago. Voyager was also a completely new series for me! I liked it very much! DP9 was also completely new -I had a lot of catching up to do!! :P

Spacemad... you may want to point out your typos on the abbreviations before someone jumps on your back!

 Sorry, Weaselbunny, but I donīt understand what you mean - do you mean that you donīt understand TSG (The Next Generation) it would seem I had a lapse into Spanish! (Next is "Siguiente" in Spanish!). DP9 should have been DS9 (Deep Space 9). I have no idea what happened there :P . (Spanish had nothing to do with it this time!)

Thanks for pointing out my mistakes!!
Hope that clears things up for you & everyone on the forum!

Sorry for getting into this, but...

Is this worth being discussed? Some like Star Trek and some donīt...
I agree with some of u... First Contact - great movie... and like all sci-fi movies, the purpose is to make us dream... get it?

Anyway... this is my opinion: It is not a topic worth discussing... Just a matter of taste...

See ya all

P.S.: Venus transit on a 10'' f/6 - BEATIFULL.

you aren't compelled to discuss it. but it's on page four now so obviously some people are enjoying it. that's all that matters.
