Thanks Tiny,

I've already tried that one. The demo version only searches for upto 4 characters in the password. bloody hell! Perhaps I should write down my passwords and keep them next to the computer?

Maybe you need to pay for the full version of the software?

I keep a small set of passwords for my low security needs.
That way if I forget which one I used, there aren't many choices to go through.
For high security needs I'm pretty careful, but usually those passwords get used and changed often, and so don't get forgotten.

PAY?? the internet is all about NOT paying ... isn't it?

I've since remembered the damn password! I sat here for about an hour thinking what the hell it could be. a combination of a few other old passwords as it turns out.

So thanks all.

Josh, there are different levels of security in MS WORD and in XP. If you want, you can read up on the various ways you can keep things safe--a bit safe, more safe, very safe; whatever.

(I'd give you specifics, but I don't need security, and I'm rusty on the techniques. I just know they are there.)

I'm suggesting you ask yourself first how much security you want. Then you might want to try something more easy to back out of.

In XP, My Docs (in Docs & Settings) are locked, for example, on a casual security level. There is also such a thing as setting "Read Only" for very low security, or in hiding things in various ways or at various depths, but creating a shortcut for yourself. You can change a file's attributes, and so on. Another trick is to change one letter for another in a long name, or to put in a period somewhere, where only a very observant person would notice.

Another method is to engage your Brain-RAM 100% for an hour, until you simply remember! So, good for you, and I'm glad it worked out! (As for actually breaking in through a WORD password, I doubt it. WORD is no easy target for that; I don't think you'd have been successful.)

Josh, may I suggest you start using only four letter words for passwords!

Well Tina, A four letter word did keep popping up everytime i tried a password and it failed. does that qualify?

Carson, thanks for the advice. I downloaded the full version of the password cracker just to test it out. I put in an eight letter password made up of letters, numbers and symbols and let it run. It's basically a brute force crack, meaning that it simply tries every possible combination (rather quickly - like 20000 combinations/sec) until one works. I assume it runs it as a hex code or ascii code?

I'm pretty anal about stuff like this... whenever I have software that requires a registration code, I save the relevant email onto my HD and add the info to a Word doc with all the other registration codes.

I then back up all my "Vital" documents onto CD - twice LOL

In case you're wondering, I *never* store passwords, PIN numbers or credit card numbers anywhere on a PC. They're all up in my head (it's getting pretty crowded in there). I'm not in the slightest bit convinced that any piece of data on your PC is safe from hackers, so that's why I only store product registration codes

I don't have passwords etc - stuff it! If somebody wants to read my doc. , let 'em.

For other security information (bank a/c nos. etc.) on put into Palm and back IT up. Never had any problem in this dept.

As far as remembering a password  - can hardly remember my own name sometimes. Good on ya Josh for remembering (after all the change you've been through - marriage, relocation and all that).

It's amazing that I managed to remember this password seeing as i didn't remember getting married or relocating! The things we'll do when drunk

It was mr Dippy Hippy who did that. When I first read it I thought you meant the other "change" ... that one women go through around 50+. I didn't do that one either just so you know.

Pick up a real sweet little application called "KeyPass" at http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/KeyPass/300...2-10327428.html , runs on Windows or Linux, and doesn't need to be installed, we run it directly off a USB Menory Stick [old USB 1.1 32mb]. Stores a HUGE number of accounts and passwords. Uses Cut & Paste [and autoclears the clipboard after], so perfect for public PC use as you by-pass any key loggers...check out the write on Tom's Hardware Page
