I'm due to write my personal statement for universities admission. One of the courses i'm willing to apply for as an undergraduate degree is Astrophysics.
In my statement i should include why do i want to study this course and why "astronomy" in specific. So i wanted to ask what problems do astronomy+physics face in our current time? How can such problems be solved? How did astronomy develop? Women contribution in astronomy+physics?..

I thought you'd help me in this urgent matter so i can write my PS clearly. Thanx in advance

Depending on where you are applying, you may find that people who plan to go into Astrophysics major in Physics as undergrads, as Astrophysics is a fairly narrow specialty, and frequently does not have its own department. This includes schools that turn out many fine Astrophysicists. Try to know what the department structure is, so that you don't rule yourself out by asking for something they don't have.

And now to the next part:

First, what do you think? Maybe what you already have, what you can come up with at the top of your head, is adequate. So...what do you have so far?

Starlab-
Ok, let me tell u what kind of problems does science ingeneral faces in my society and the world as a whole.
Science and scientisits aren't much appreciated. No support from governments. Almost no funding for reasearch and no money enough for support even for amatuer astronomers (my society), and even on a larger scale no enough money is donated for researchers and scientisits. Science doesn't play a dominant role in worldly decisions and in societies. Science is exploited for political ends. (Oops i don't intend to open a political discussion here! :P ) And i guess many more but this is what i can think of for the moment. And please add if u have more

Thanx victoria for the help.

Antoniseb-
Yes, what u said is right. And that restricted me in my choice. But the universities i'm gonna apply for offers what i'm asking for, and if not "Astrophysics" they offer a "Physics and Astronomy" BSc. degree.

Actually, what you said there are great topic sentences, and all you have to do is put together a good thesis, find examples for your topic sentences, and voila you have a great Personal Statement.

Hi Ola,
firstly let me wish you good luck with your application. Secondly I'm going to give you some advice which has nothing to do with astronomy. When you make a personal statement for university application you should write perfect English with 100% correct spelling and syntax. If you really spend far too much time checking over this, you'll already be ahead of most of the field! A personal statement should reflect your intentions and goals as clearly and concisely as possible. When you think you've got it just right read it out loud to as many friends as can put up with it! Ask them if what they hear reflects what thay think of as your stand point.
Don't be "wordy", just tell it like it is! And you'll be fine.

Cheers Ferg.

Thanx ferg. for your tips Very much appreciated!
Don't worry about the English, i have enough time to write it perfectly and revise it all over again.

I'll try to make it formal and unbias; hence, i'll not mention the political statement i did in my previous post. I guess the one who's reading my statement should sense my commitment to science and my full awareness of the problems science faces in our current time. But sticking politics in the middle isn't a good idea

Ola, you're welcome.
Politics is a bit dodgey but not totaly out of bounds if you give it a spin around project funding for sciences!

It's good to have you here on UT and I hope you get time read some of the topics.
Post up some comments and reactions to the stuff that's up there so we can see what your like!
Cheers
Ferg
