Hi all,
My wife suggested "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd!
We sould definitely play "Time" for the relativists among us!
How about "Stairway to the stars"? I'll sing!
Also we'll have to take some air with us or no one will hear anything!

I went to a party on the moon once. It was terrible, there was no atmosphere!!
Cheers
Ferg

So appologies please. You all seem to have forgotten about me and my existence. Now I am going to go and cry in a corner.

Unless I receive some damn good apologies that is.

OK, I think the trip to Mars idea had a lot of promise. Thanks Spacefreak2.
That being said, you were a little hard to work with, and not a frequent visitor to the forum. So I started a more forum friendly implementation of your great idea. Stay if you like, but keep it friendly, or we'll have to put you in hibernation with Tom2Mars.

Three days to departure. Get your things packed, stop your mail, find someone to feed your pets, and pay your bills ahead so they don't cut your service.

Oh wow! It looks like I started frequenting the forum just in time. What a great deal. My travel agent said he could get me to 2002 VE68 for $599 all inclusive, the resort there has a wet bar with a miriachi band, but I'd be willing to give that up for something wih a little more gravity.

If you guys still have space, I'd like to come along. I can add another trumpet to the orchestra. And I won't take any space inside, I'm gonna bring my water-skis and just ride behind you guys en route.

Let me know if there are any spaces left. My boss owes me 5 days of vacation, but I need to give him 36 hours notice before I take it.

What should we pack? I never got to mars last time, so I wouldn't know.

Hi Rigel & aeolus,

There is room for you two. No one needs to water-ski behind the crew module.
As to packing, I've mentioned it above. Entertainment toiletries, clean clothes etc. for the to and from parts, but aside from an EVA suit [provided by me], you are completely on your own as to whta to bring to Mars. Plan realistically. We have limited cargo space. On the sixth, at dinner I will discuss what to through out because of lack of room. I'll take input, but the decision is mine.

All my stuff is gonna fit in a military duffle bag, 100x40x40 cm. It should only weigh about 40kg. The only thing else I'm gonna bring is a videophone (there's no way our trip will get aired on CNN without a live feed from the source with a very long time delay and really bad resolution). That I'll keep handy with me all the time.

Is anyone bringing their pet already? Personally I'm a cat person, but I wouldn't mind traveling with a dog if someone else already called it. As long as it doesn't bark when we're trying to send our audio transmissions back to the home planet. If its no big deal, and no one has allergies, could I bring my cat? I'll share my rations with her, she doesn't shed, very very friendly with people and other pets, and she never gets carsick-zeroG should be a breeze for her...

If you bring a pet, we keep it in hibernation except when we actually are on Mars. On Mars you'll be expected to provide whatever it needs [oxygen, water, thermal suit, litter box, balls of string, etc.] Pack accordingly, we don't want any dead pets.

We'll have to check international space treaties about whether Mars has a pooper-scooper law, but for the moment, please assume it does.

Kitty Thermal Suit!?!? That's still in the R&D room downstairs, and thats the beta version!...It definately won't be ready for the launch date.

I just wanted something soft cute and cuddly floating around the cabin. Teddy Bear it is. ...Or maybe that blue plush lobster I won at the fall fair last year. Any objections/constraints on toy lobsters?

Alright, I've worked out a deal with Zed on platform D, and she has eliminated some of the cargo space to increase the size of the crew cabin. We now have twelve seats, five beds, and two hibernation chambers.

The only problem is that we can only fit fourteen in the high protection area, and it will be tight. So, if we end up having a solar storm, someone is going to have to hibernate. Currently we have sixteen planning to make the trip including Tom2Mars, who will be hibernating.

The crew so far is:
aeolus duffle bag, plush lobster
antoniseb krumhorn mylar, etc.
chook trumpet laptop with accounting software, vodka and coke, overcoat, "moon boots"
damienpaul a seismometer and a monopoly game
ferg.c bass teddy bear
Janice
jimmy guitar
kashi keyboard
Ola D. violin party stuff, cards, PC games
Rigel snare drum
Spacefreak2 triangle
spacemad digital camera, mini greenhouse
Starlab clarinet
suntrack2 vocals lots of stuff
wstevenbrown Beaujolais, climbing gear?
tom2mars [hibernating]

You've got two days to think through what you're bringing. You don't want to get stuck on Mars without the right equipment.

interesting portfolio anton,
being a responsibility given to me during this MARS ORCHESTRA, now i am practising at my home some songs to sing on the mars, and other will give some nice musing background, there is no flud light essential of red colour, the colour is abondon there on mars, the need is to carry some different lights there like, blue, green, gold, violate etc. then that master will stand infront of that orchestra to drive with a stick in hand and moving here and there. / \ .

So, what are you bringing along, Janice? I don´t see any mention of whatever "luggage" you are thinking of bringing - just remember there is only limited space, so don´t go about bringing 15 pairs of shoes or 10 fur coats or we´ll have to leave your "luggage" on the porch!!! :P

I wonder what the band would sound like with such low atmospheric pressure.

I recommend we learn our respective National Anthems. We could play those on our initial blastoff. So how many countries are represented on our infamous crew?
1 US citizen here.....oohhhhhh and I play a really cool "Star Spangeled Banner" ala Jimi Hendrix. I do it in the key of G major for those of you who want to join in.

If you folks don't mind a newbie tagging along, I'll sign up too. For the band, I'll bring my guitar, but I'd also like to bring my golf clubs. You never know, I might have time to get a round in at the Face on Mars Golf and Counry Club.

And if we're doing the national anthem thing, I'm Canadian.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I'll bring some Guinness too!

OK, you're in, but now I have to close the list. The ship is full, and a solar storm could kill one person if it happens. We need to be lucky. As last in, BBDunk, you may end up as the person taking the risk. Are you OK with that?

I'm still not sure what the departure date and time is. Just out of curiosity, what's our ship called? Does it have a more profound name than "The SOLAR SPECTRUM 3"?

Hey, Damo, don't go bringing too much of your seismology gear along - as I said to Janice "there´s only limited room" - even in your fabulous beard!!!! :P

Hi guys,
I'm all set! But how about the next outing?
I played the Jupiter Symphony by Mozart two weeks ago with sir Neville Marriner.
(there's a spacey name!) so... How about I organize a trip to Jupiter? And I can do an arrangement for the band?

We will be the first people on Mars [If we can beat Amundsen there].

Schedule is this:
December 6, we meet at the base of the space elevator.
December 7, we have our last off-ship dinner at the Beni Hana on Platform D [100,000 miles up], and then blast off.
If all goes well, we should arrive Decenber 21st.
Get your sight-seeing done, we depart again on January 4, if possible.
Back to platform D by Jan 18 for some BarBQ, and then home.

If you plan to come along, post what you're bringing with you before 00:00 6 Dec 2004.
If we have less then eight by that date, the trip will have been proven a bad idea.

I need a volunteer to take care of assigning duties. Janice, are you up for that?
Where is the base of the Space Elevator situated?

About beating Admunsen - I don´t think we´ll have any trouble there - he´s been dead for sometime I think!!

Where´s Janice got to? Has she chickened out? :P

The base of the space elevator is 5 miles east of the coast of Brazil on the equator. There's a shuttle from the shore. Our car departs at 00:15 UT, that's about nine hours from now. The elevator goes pretty fast, it takes about twelve hours including three other stops.

Janice is not a frequent visitor to the UT forum yet, so don't count on her to be chatty. She's with us though.

The ship's name is the Solar Sloop "Adventure". There really weren't any other ships available.

I'm at the base of the space elevator with my stuff. I've gotten confirmation from Zed that everything is in working order, and the "Adventure" is ready according to my specifications.

BTW, I have brought along a two-ton lead plate and a big bottle of BMS-354825 in case someone get stuck outside the radiation safe area during a Solar storm. Perhaps death is not guaranteed.

BTW, I also have Tom2Mars with me, already hiberenating.

I'll be taking the 00:15UT car up the elevator. Everyone else should try to get that one.
There are cars every six hours, so there's three more cars that you could catch in time for departure from platform D. Getting there earlier will help in terms of packing. BTW, the manager at Beni Hana's does not want us practicing our music in the restaurant, so we'll have to save that for the actual journey.
