OK, you're in, but now I have to close the list. The ship is full, and a solar storm could kill one person if it happens. We need to be lucky. As last in, BBDunk, you may end up as the person taking the risk. Are you OK with that? [/b][/quote]

Did I miss anything while I was gone?

Oh!...OK...I'm caught up now.

Thanks for saving me a spot Anton, I wish I HAD been hibernating. As it is, I've been only managing about 3.5 hours of sleep a night finishing up a design for a single-stage to orbit passenger vehicle and running it through the flight simulator 400 times.

Just in case the space elevator is stuck, you know...always good to have a backup.

Thanks Tinaa for getting in touch and letting me know about this. B)

OK, I'm on my way up. The 2.5 G's is pretty heavy. It's a good thing they have comfortable reclining seats for this. We've been going about fifteen minutes. I got a pretty impressive view of the Andies near sunset on the way up. Tom2Mars, Ola D. and BB Dunk are on this trip with me. I hope the rest of you guys get on one of the next few. I don't want the departure of "Adventure" to be delayed.

They said that we'll be mostly up to speed soon, and will start serving the honey-roasted peanuts and soft-drinks. Note to you guys coming late: pack a lunch.

Sorry I have been out late the past couple of nights (gigs), but I'm aboard and I think I'll take a little nap now. Where's my bedroom?

The trip is great so far I am enjoying my time with everyone here. Come on people try not to be late!

Suntrack,
You should give us Yoga lessons there, so don't forget to bring some music for exercising. I suggest that you should bring recycled paper bags instead of plastic ones.. We need not to pollute Mars too

I see Tom has just woken up from his "hibernation" of the last couple of months! :P Welcome back Tom!! You've just woken up in time to join us on our trip to Mars! if you had missed the trip you would have had to modify your user name from Tom2Mars to Tommissed Mars :P

If I don't get this finished it'll be me who'll miss the flight!!!! :P (then I really will be MAD!!! )

Suntrack, why 20 computers if there are only 12 of us? (8 for backups?)

150 cameras? Umbrellas - for toxic light?????

You´ll need a cargo ship to take along all that stuff - or were you planning on giving up your place? :P

Doh! The "Adventure" and Beni Hana's are both at platform "C". This is where the centrifugal acceleartion gives us one G. We will load the ship here, and then we will be carried to platform "D" where we will be released. At platform "D" the acceleration feels like 2 G's. There are no services [restauants etc] at platform "D".

We do have enough room for the stuff that Suntrack2 is bringing, largely because most of the rest of us have been very careful to only mention small things. The toxic light he's talking about is UV radiation. If you had exposed skin on Mars, you's get three things: frostbite, a big hicky, and a nasty sunburn. There is no ozone layer there.

A big hicky? I should think it would be more than big!

I'm hungry, and, as far as I can see, the food supplies are running low. I hope we won't have to live on rachens.

Hmmm. Perhaps you're right. We might not have enough food on board. Fortunately we don't plan to depart for platform "D" for another seven hours or so. Can you figure out what we need for food and water for the six week trip and try to buy it here? While you're at it, picking up some paper towels and first aid supplies might be smart.

I'm kind of stuck watching the packing operations at the ship.

Actually, yes. If you can take over the inventory and manifest duties, I can start work on preparation of the flight systems.

In about four and a half hours, I could use a report on who has arrived at platform "C" and what they have with them.

Ola, Many thanks in advance.

The crew is, I don't think we've seen them all at the platform yet:
aeolus duffle bag, plush lobster
antoniseb krumhorn mylar, etc.
Big Brother Dunk
chook trumpet laptop with accounting software, vodka and coke, overcoat, "moon boots"
damienpaul a seismometer and a monopoly game
ferg.c bass teddy bear
Janice
jimmy guitar
kashi keyboard
Ola D. violin party stuff, cards, PC games
Rigel snare drum
Spacefreak2 triangle
spacemad digital camera, mini greenhouse
Starlab clarinet
suntrack2 vocals lots of stuff
wstevenbrown Beaujolais, climbing gear?
tom2mars [hibernating]

I was surprised that GalaxyGirl didn't volunteer, but someone competent has to help Fraser with the forum, wipe dubious posts, keep Tinaa company, and keep Josh in line.

Departure from Platform C to Platform D is scheduled for 00:15UT, which is less than two hours from now. If we don't hear from Spacefreak2, we should assume she's stowed away in one of the hibernation modules. Same with Janice. [My ratioanle for that is that they are infrequent visitors to the forum, and wouldn't normally keep up]. As to the others, I would like a positive confirmation that they made it to the platform in time.

It will take eighteen hours to get to Platform D. If we here that someone of the missing got to platform C during that stretch, we can delay launch for 24 hours.
Otherwise we take off without them. This is OK, it will reduce the unpleasantness of a solar storm.

I'm here, the reason yall didn't see me is because I had fallen asleep benind the big flower pot on Platform C. I was trying to get some extra oxygen before the big takeoff.
I'm a little hungry too; so where's the kitchen?
Yeah Chook, the guitar is all packed and I have extra strings too.
Oh yeah and Spacemad mentioned something about feedback, but don't worry David, I have a Marshall 100 watt head with 2-4x12 speaker cabs, so we'll have plenty of feedback! :P B)

We've got an infrared 802.16k connection on the "Adventure". It's 224 gigbit/sec but there will be some delays when round trips are required. No instant messaging after the first day out.

BTW, we are now on our way to platform "D". Eighteen hours till launch.
Oof, I just looked down [feels like up] for the first time seen leaving "C". We are already a long way from home.

How far down to ground-level
We're almost to Platform "D", making what feels is a controlled descent feeling about half a G. We're about a thousand kilometers 'above' the platform right now. Brazil is about 120,000 kilometers above our heads. Be sure and use the potty now, because in a short time, we're going to be on platform "D" struggling at 2 'Gs.

We're going to stay at platform "D" until 18:15UT today, and then launch, unless we get a compelling reason to delay the launch by 24 hours.

There is no one at Platform "D" except machinery and ships ready to launch, and ships that have just been caught on their return journey. It is an uncomfortable and solitary place.

Chook, they are kept in place so that to be used only when needed.
We don't need to use them at the moment, so don't worry yourself about it.

I was just wondering who's going to do the cooking stuff?

We are on Platform "D" suffering at 2 G's waiting for the launch window, which is in about two hours. There is also one more car that could get to us before launch coming up the space elevator, in case anyone on the passenger/crew list is running late. Unless I hear otherwise, and with above noted exceptions, we will leave only with those people who've checked in.

*gasp*...

oh man, I think I just made it. Sorry, I got all caught up at the base of the elevator, security nabbed me with my nailclippers.....

The airline lost my luggage down here to Brazil, so all I have now is my carry-on: The lobster and the videophone, plus I bought a couple bags of space-groceries. I see you guys only thought of that at the last minute as well. Not to worry, I got us plenty to eat, including a giant toblerone we can break out on christmas day!

I can`t wait until the launch. Call your freidns, tell them they can watch it on CNN. Wolf Blitzer is going to call me on the videophone a few minutes before launch and he`ll get it on the air, live. (with the delay, of course.)

OK, we are buckling in for the launch. Were are at T-minus five minutes.
On board we have:
aeolus - last minute arrival
antoniseb
Big Brother Dunk
chook
Janice hibernating
jimmy
kashi
Ola D.
Rigel
Spacefreak2 hibernating
spacemad
suntrack2
tom2mars

I can't find:
Starlab - I'm guessing he's asleep in the luggage somewhere
wstevenbrown

note: Ferg.c seems to be on the platform, but I can't tell if he's planning to go with us.

That's it, we are underway. We were released by Platform "D", seven milliseconds early at 18:15:00UT and are now coasting away from Earth, travelling at 9.75 kilometers per second. All systems nominal. Expected arrival at Mars orbit 18:35UT On December 21st.

The interior cabin cylinder [33 feet in diameter] is begining to spin up to the 1/6 G that we'll have for the duration of the trip, so we felt weightless for only about 30 seconds. Luckily no lunches were lost in the process.

In 90 minutes we will begin to deploy our solar concentrator. Once we are fully underway, we can try to get Janice & Spacefreak2 out of hibernation, and dig out the musical instruments.

Can someone dig around looking for Starlab? I'm sure he's in here somewhere.

I think we should get some entertainment under way. How about a few numbers from the band? Spacefreak2, you can join in with your triangle if you've finished your hibernation phase......

OK, I can close the blinds, and you won't notice the spinning anymore. I've got to go to the command consol, and get things going with the solar concentrator. It should take about five to six hours to deploy it. If you guys need anything else, select someone as cabin steward or something. Who can give me a hand up front?
