OK, I think the trip to Mars idea had a lot of promise. Thanks Spacefreak2.
I am renting a 12 passenger vehicle, with reasonable cargo space and a custom Mars landing shuttle. We will be the first people on Mars [If we can beat Amundsen there].

Schedule is this:
December 6, we meet at the base of the space elevator.
December 7, we have our last off-ship dinner at the Beni Hana on Platform D [100,000 miles up], and then blast off.
If all goes well, we should arrive Decenber 21st.
Get your sight-seeing done, we depart again on January 4, if possible.
Back to platform D by Jan 18 for some BarBQ, and then home.

If you plan to come along, post what you're bringing with you before 00:00 6 Dec 2004.
If we have less then eight by that date, the trip will have been proven a bad idea.

I need a volunteer to take care of assigning duties. Janice, are you up for that?

Count me in!! I'll bring my beard, meteorological equipment (interesting measurements of mars weather), a seismometer and a monopoly game!

As always, you can count on SpaceMad to take part in any expedition to Mars! :P

I´ll bring along my digital camera & take some pics - just to show all the sceptics we have actually been there - & so we don´t get a repeat of the Moon landing fiasco!

If Chook does the washing up I can help with the cooking! :P

Perhaps we can use my horticultural talents to grow some "fast food" in a mini greenhouse onboard which will also help with the purification of our air supply, i.e. removing the CO2 & replenishing the Oxygen.

Just finished reading the previous thread - I´m very disappointed & upset that no-one thought to invite me - the one & only, original SpaceMad - along on your trip to Mars last month! (I might just change my name to MarsMad - sounds better! :P ).

Someone thought of inviting Tom2Mars or said he wouldn´t be going along without him - well, I agree with whoever it was - only Tom could build us an economical & environmentally friendly cabin that functions with solar cells. We really must have him along if we hope to survive & get back here to tell the rest of humanity what secrets the Martians have that keep them hidden from all the probes we send up there looking for life - & how they cause almost 50% of them to fail in one way or another.

How´s it going Antonioseb? When will you be ready?

I'm in...assuming that music WILL be allowed on this voyage! Will there be a washing machine on board? I need to figure how many pairs of underwear to bring.
One and only Spacemad, don't worry, we would have let you know before takeoff, I think? If not, then certainly we would have sent you a Martian postcard, "Wish You Were Here".

We're using some Tom2Mars technology to get there and back.

Departure date from the surface of Earth is December 6th. I'm mostly ready now, but I'm only providing transportation to and from the surface, I need you guys to plan what to bring with us for the exploration and survival on Mars, plus deal with the chaos/boredom of four weeks couped up with each other on the transport. I'll judge how things are working based on what people say they've brought, and continued input.

Concerning Tom2Mars, he is encouraged to join us, but it has been a while since he's posted here. If someone knows a way to invite him, please do.

If that's the only reason to not go, then you should go. I suspect the trip back from Mars will be pretty uneventful.

I'll come along. We didn't actually get to Mars last time, and seeing as this trip appears to be more organized, I'll hop on the space ship if you don't mind!

I'll bring a snare drum with me to accompany the band.

What? No mountain climbing gear? So close... Ok, then. I'll bring The Martian Chronicles, and Stranger in a Strange Land, so as not to be culturally lost. May I suggest a hearty red-- perhaps a Beaujolais? S

OK, I need someone else in the role of enthusiastic young person to keep track of who's in, and assigning duties. I also need an equipment manager to catalog all the things that people have announced that they intend to bring. We may have a mass, or volume problem if we try and take it all, or perhaps we'll be light.

So far we still have passenger room for new-comers. Note that I am saving one space for Tom2Mars, who is currently hibernating.

Volunteers?

Aslong as you keep some space for my teddy bear on the outward leg so you can bring him back on the return leg I'll be happy. He's about a foot tall and has a little pot belly so your equipment manager can judge how much room you need.

Hi all,

Here's the orchestral list for the trip:
Ola: violin,
Chook: Trumpet,
StarLab: Clarinet,
Kashi: Piano, (I don't know if this was a secret but it's not now!)
Rigel: drums,
Ferg: bass,
Sorry if I've missed some one out.
But we've got a good band going here!

I've just looked at Chooks post and you've already done this leg work!

Kashi's the guy for the keys!
Johny Rouse has also just got a paino!

Here are some repertoire suggestions (apart from The Planets which is the first piece every one says)

Moonlight Sonata
Moonlight Serenade
Stardust
Fly me to the moon
Sunny
Star eyes
Sky Rocket
The Bowie thing with Major Tom. (I forget what it's called)
The urban spaceman
It's only a paper moon
Blue skies
any other suggestions are welcome!

Ferg

Sorry if I've missed some one out.
I didn't mention it in this thread, but I am planning to bring my Krumhorn. It is a smallish instrument for playing the most melodic of duck calls.

Concerning songs, I'd want to include "Satellite of Love" & "Rocket man".

BTW, For myself, In addition to toiletries, food, beverage, and entertainment items such as books and movies, I plan to bring several thousand square meters of aluminized Mylar, a mylar seamer, Lots of nylon monofiliment string, and a large glass thick-walled lembic.

Mars surface will be provided for all.

BTW, this vessel I'm renting has room for twelve, but that includes seating for eight, and beds for four. We will be hot bedding it, and letting four people sleep per eight hour shift. There are twelve personal lockers that are one by one, by three meters for things that you'll be using in transit, and one large eight by eight by sixteen meter locker on the landing craft for things that we will use on Mars.

Please someone, bring a habitat, and some oxygen and water.
