Welcome, Greenfeather, the worst thing about deadend jobs is the dead end people you work with. Being interested in science, finding some you can have an intellagent conversation with is almost impossible.

I just bought the most beautiful book "Infinite Worlds: An illustrated voyage to planets beyond our sun" by Ray Villard and Lynette Cook. Talk about space eye-candy!
I took a pretty good short course on astronomy with Ray Villard at the Smithsonian a couple of months ago. He was offering his book (of course), but for some reason I didn't take the opportunity. Perhaps that was a mistake.

Hi,

I'm Michael from Hillsboro, Or. USA. I've been a member for some time but I've been away for almost as long. I may even have posted on this thread as it was started about the time my ex got custody of the Mac.

Now I have an antiquated PC with inadequate everything. Oh well.

At 56 years of age I am quite pleased to be called a junior member. I may never post again to be sure I don't lose that status.

Welcome. We've been wanting for a proper mealomaniac bent on world domination (that is your plan, correct?) ever since a certain posting turtle seems to have taken leave.

I guess I'm a little overdue here. I've lurked much more than posting so far because there is so much to learn from everybody else here first.
I go by Blue Fire because, when I was young and stupid (I'm no longer young), I had a Blue AMC Javelin and drove it like wild Fire.
I spend 4 years at a 2 year college because I couldn't decide what I want to be when I grew up. I still haven't grown up.
Anyway: I got married, went back to a 4 year college for 5 years, got divorced, did some computer work, did some teaching, did some writing for a local magazine, did some more computer/internet work, did some more teaching, did some more writing, had a quad bypass heart operation, sunk into depression, got counseling, took meds, striving to get back on my feet, wound up here,. . . and LOVING IT!

Hmmn - Hi all. I found this sight whilst looking for a sig for another site... The quote from Blade Runner - Reutger Hauers last speach. I firmly believe the word he used was "shoals" a nautical term - as in space "ship".

Didn't readly see a search feature. Can anyone point me towards a site search?

Also is there any thread regarding Dark Sky Initiative?

Thanks,
Bill

Could the shoulder be what you heard as shoals?

Simplest site search is to google with site:www.bautforum.com as one of the search terms.

Hey all,

My name is Chris, I'm a software engineer from RI and big sci-fi fan. I've always been interested in the sciences, especially astronomy, physics and space travel. I'm currently on the final "Rama" novel and enjoy video games, music (I'm a drummer), sports and working out.

I also enjoy long walks on the beach and the gentle touch of the breeze....oh wait...wrong website for that! whoops!

Hi icepick3383. I spent five years of my life (back in the 80s) in The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Welcome to BAUT.

hello!

well, liked the whole asteroid hitting the Earth video.

Plus, I deal with a lot of people that believe in UFOs. Most are honestly rather reasonable, with a reasonable explaination.

Other than that my life is rather stressful right now, so nothing like some good science and reason to bring calm to a life filled with emotion and confusion.

Hi RK, I think you will learn a lot here. Get ready to throw it back in their faces.

Hello folks,

My name is Dennis, I live just outside Stockholm, Sweden with my family (we have a son, five y o). Working as IT tech support, interested in space flight, astronomy, sci-fi, well just anything space related. I have read the BA and UT pages for some time now and even this forum so I thought it was about time to register. Our exploration of space has fascinated me as long as I can remember and with new discoveries like the exoplanets it's just becoming more and more interesting. I have two telescopes, Meade ETX-90 and a 12" dobsonian (collecting dust in the garage).

:-D

Greetings and salutations!

I'm from Western Victoria, Australia, and while I couldn't call myself an astronomer, I have great respect for the work astronomers do. I have a fascination for hearing about new discoveries, and for the beauty and wonder of the universe.

I post in a few skeptic forums (mainly JREF) and I have found the Bad Astronomy website to be a valuable resource over the years. I also found a wealth of useful information in these forums in my endeavours debunking 9/11 denialists over the past year or so.

I went through a short but intense woo phase when I first started using the internet about 8 years ago, and I still read/post in a couple of woo forums to try and instil some reason. I come across some strange things from time to time, and it was one of things that gave me the idea today to sign up here and discuss it.

I've come across a man who has a 'method' of predicting important dates in world history based on our old favourite, 'hyperdimensional physics'. Would the appropriate forum for a topic about this be "Against the Mainstream"?

I'm looking forward to participating in some of all the interesting conversations here.
