Hey guys, I've just joined today.

I find the universe as fascinating as the sub atomic world, and that's basically it, I'm no expert on space or anything, just your average guy I guess to some extent.

Welcome to BAUT, Ross!
I'm pretty average as well.

Haven't seen this post... joined last week:

Love science in general, photographer by hobby, planning to get a pair of nice good binoculars for star gazing soon, don't "believe" in anything except the Great Cthulhu...

Best regards to all.

Either way, have a happy holiday season, both in the real world and on BAUT, and tell Chtulhu he's no fun.

Good evening! Here's my intro post!

I found Bad Astronomy a few years ago (after that Moon Landing hoax "documentary"), but only decided to register for the forum now as I've just bought the book this week and am slowly ploughing my way through it.

I studied astrophysics at degree level, graduating in 1998, but there aren't too many opportunities for the astronomer/physicist in North Wales, and at the time, I wasn't ready to move. Consequently, I have lapsed over the past (almost) 10 years and have become a report writer/programmer instead, but the interest is still there.

I couldn't do the calculus required anymore, and I remember the name "Lane-Emden Function" from my stellar physics class, but wouldn't be able to tell you what it is or what it calculates! (I'm not sure I could tell you that at the time either - the lecturer wasn't the most interesting person in the world and made it very difficult to learn!!!) But that's not really important now, is it? The good thing is that even reading the first few chapters of Bad Astronomy, I have learned things I never knew, and some things I knew vaguely about, but didn't understand until it was put in such a simple form!

I got into astronomy as a kid, using a very cheap telescope which allowed me to see the rings of Saturn and the dark north and south equatorial bands on Jupiter - although I had to strain my eyes so much to see them, it's probably the reason I have to wear glasses today!

More recently, I have become interested in space travel and orbital mechanics - and that's the fault of Martin Schweiger through his superb Orbiter simulator.

Anyway, that's me. I look forward to browsing the site in more detail. It'll probably distract me from my work in the same way as the Richard Dawkins, Bad Psychics, Orbiter and Gwlad Rugby forums, but hey, astronomy is far more interesting than writing boring data reports on student completion and attainment rates, isn't it?

Hello Bad Astronomers!

I am an astrophysicist by training, but now I dedicate my time in particular to one object - the planet Earth. With space geodesy there is more connections to my before and now life than just the fact that the Earth is a planet as good as any other planet. :-)

Through VLBI I even get to keep in touch with the remote quasars!

And planetary geodesy is another subject.

I look forward to mix my before and after here at Bad Astronomy

Welcome, Stellare! Always great to have an astrophysicist here (I'm just an amateur, I admire those who are real experts).

The last one of those I saw said something about stars falling on your state. Maybe they decided to go with good astronomy!

Or did it say "Home of the Sabin vaccine"?

Meanwhile, welcome to the BAUT, moioci!

Read the FAQs, especially the rules, and have fun.

Hi Stellare. Nice handle!

I started out as an astrophysics major, but then sold out and veered into mechanical engineering.

BTW, there are some who want to take the Pluto ruling and extend it such that only J, S, U, and N are considered as planets!

I trust you folks are no longer overwhelmed by all the Norwegian Blues that stopped pining and headed north?

Welcome!

Sub atomic as in "really small" or as is "Navy nuke"?
