Larry Niven spent some time there. It's obvious in many of his stories. He and I both attended (but didn't graduate from) Washburn University (Not at the same time. He had already left before I got there).

Hello!
I remember posting here for a bit almost 2 years ago and learning some really great things, I really can't say why I left. All I know now is that its good to be back, and I hope to learn some new fantastic things. Since I don't think I ever made much of an impact on anyone and many things about me have changed, I'll re-introduce myself I guess. I'm from the great, wonderful, light-polluted state of Maryland (I seem to remember some great minds here also from this state!) and I'm positioned close to the capitol of Annapolis. When I was younger I took a short astronomy class at the Naval Academy where I was simply awed and fascinated by the wonders littered throughout our universe. I've always been a fan of science fiction, and although I don't have the love affair with mathematics that some users here take joy in, I have always enjoyed math and physics theory. I'm a bit of a poet, although I can't seem to get myself out of this dark period that I've been stuck in for almost as long as I can remember. Also, I take pride in being a musician and a music elitist. Despite being picky, I try to keep an open mind about anything and everything and I'll often bring up some misconception that I have with the hope that someone will correct me so thoroughly that my whole world view will be turned upside down and I'll feel the need to go meditate on what I've learned for the next few days. I'm young, not quite old enough to drink, so I think I'll have plenty of misconceptions left to be corrected by those who have traveled before myself. I look forward to learning, and I hope in the future I may be able to help others like myself learn even just a small fraction of what I might come to know. Alright, I think I'm satisfied with that. I could have just said, "I'm back!" but I think every regular would have scratched their heads and asked, "Who's that?" |

Hi there!
I'm Hannu Siivonen, 25 year old student from Asikkala, Finland. It should be noted, that due to the fact that my native language is finnish, there are some problems with my literal english. I also have tendency to make alot of typos :-) I guess anything else of importance will be revealed in other threads. |

drainbread, I'm in a similar boat about 13 and 1/2 years earlier. Just leaving (not JW, but...well, you get the idea). I have to say I am fascinated by the name, do tell more!
To everyone worried about your english as a second language, don't. As in don't worry. I don't know about the rest of the country but in the San Fransisco Bay area I hear so many languages and accents I think I could understand anyone. Occasionally I have to ask, but I have found a lot of english speakers understand reasonably well what people are trying to tell us. As in, we're used to having our language slaughtered. Maybe not true for others, but I am. Not that you should STAY that way, but it is a workable deal. On the flip side, it seems like many non-native englishers here have at least better grammar than many natives, and vocabulary can come with time. Even if you feel a little behind, your still light years ahead of the "grammar" on many websites. To all I didn't cover, welcome or welcome back! Edit: I should add by "slaughter" I'm referring to accents more than all the dynamics, although some do quite a bit of damage in multiple areas.

man on the moon, you're totally on the right track there. I'd go so far as to say that many people who use English as their second language are actually better speakers than natives. Once they've pinned down some of the more esoteric vocabulary, they're much better at using words that mean what they're saying than native speakers who think almost wholly with connotation than the actual meaning of the words they're using.
