Hello everyone,
My name is Kathy and I have two children, a beautiful 3 year old and a pain in the rear 35 year old (well ok-HE'S my main man). I'm a 32 year old student in New Mexico. Yes, we have great skies for viewing. I'm currently working on my BS in microbiology and biochemistry, for 4 years now. Only 4 more to go! Anyways, it's nice to meet you all. I used to love stargazing and anything astronomy and/or marine biology, well anything science based. But alas, life changes as due peoples interests and now my 3 year old loves the stars. We are now working as a family unit to rediscover the stars, so to speak. When I'm not studying or parenting I try to enjoy some reading of just about every subject, fiction and non-fiction. My favorite author is Piers Anthony, but right now I am reading Microbe Hunters by Paul De Kruif. Another hobby of mine is the journal club at my university where we read, analyze and criticize scientific papers from all the sciences to improve (Hopefully) our current understanding of the developing sciences of the past, current, and future. What a mouthful, anyways it's something like that. So if anybody knows of a good paper, please let me know! Hope to be learning tons of astronomy soon, my son's very inquisitive (sp?).

Hi Kathy and welcome to the forums! You are right on the clear, dark skies here in NM. If only the winds would calm down for a while. What part are you from? I'm in the East Mountain area (Edgewood). Mr Q

Hey everyone,

I'm a sophomore in college who is currently majoring in philosophy, and thinking of possibly making my second major cognitive science. So, it may seem a bit odd that I'm attracted to an astronomy forum. However, last semester I took an introductory astronomy course and I just loved it.

I'd like to apologize in advance for the massive grammatical, mathematical, spelling, and just general typos I will surely make in my posts on this forum. You see, for my entire life I've suffered from severe writing processing/ acute visual-perceptual learning disabilities which makes it very difficult for me to see mistakes in my own writing. Constantly checking myself also has the consequence of making me a slow writer--so if I don't respond to your post in short order its likely because I need time check and write my posts so that they are relatively error free (definately not error free).

That said, I think my learning disability is related to my passion for philosophy, cognitive science, and perhaps for my growing fascination with astronomy.

Growing up, I always got the distinct feeling that other people saw things differently than I did. I think the gaps I sometimes felt between my experiences and those of others built in me a fascination with perception and knowledge. In astronomy, what particularly intrigues me is Einstein's insights on relativity: specifically, the consequences of his theory on what we think of as space, time, and causality, which I think are the framework for perception and knowledge.

I thought I'd end with this quote:
"Two things fill the mind with new and ever increasing wonder and awe: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me." -Immanuel Kant

Hi Big Star. I'm a bit in your boat. I was a Political Science major and I tried a minor in Philosophy but I ended up in Classics instead. I took a ton of Astronomy and other Science classes just for fun and found a real connection with Astronomy. Unfortunately, I was too close to my legal career to change paths. It continues to be a strong fascination for me. I've always had the interest just never the opportunity to pursue it properly.

Hi Big Star and welcome to the forums! No mention of the kind of observing equipment you use - what are they, if any? Mr Q

Hi, I came accross this site as I was looking up Sylvia Brown, I had never heard of her but had received a book as a gift so I decided to find out a bit about her gald I came to this site, I live in Sydney Australia and have for many years been interested in these topics, and have come across many interesting charaters all claiming to be physics who can tell you all the things that will make you have a good life and can unlock who knows, I think that these people are somewhat evil as they take money in Slyvia case quite alot yet the true spirtual gifted should do it for FREE or only charge a reasonable amount or ask for a donation or not charge at all, hey if anyone knows of these types please let me know they really might be gifted, I think why charge people who are already suffering in there lives huge amounts of money!! and tell them a load of grap!! or what they want to hear,to these people let me just say that you will be accountable for what you do, as you are you are taking advantage of desperate souls and you will then at your end face the real spirtual gifted one who will not be too impressed with your doings and hey he can guide us all and its free just ask
thank you James for creating this site its about time we rid ourselves from this type of people bless you and take care all

James?
You mean Randi?
That would be JREF You may have found a link here from JREF.

This board however, was founded by Phil Plait- the Bad Astronomer as the BABB (Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board)
He merged his board later with Fraser Cain's Universe Today website creating BAUT (Bad Astronomy and Universe Today)

Just to clear that up- because you may notice that PhilPlait wears boxing gloves

Welcome to BAUT
You can definitely find a Lot of information here on the paranormal, as well as employing critical thinking and rational discernment.
Going by your post, you seem to have the clarity of thinking already.

Arissa, Claver58, Angry astronomer and Ruinhayes - Welcome all to the forums. I'm curious as to what type of stargazing each of you are into (visual, imaging, etc.). It's a great forums site and lots of nice, friendly people to share with so hopefully you all won't be too bashful and join in on a regular basis . Mr Q

Hi I'm Cartooniverse. I live in Upstate New York. Dad was a science writer for a large metropolitan newspaper in the 1960's and 1970's. It follows that I've got a deep love of space and science.

I'm 45 and am a professional cameraman and educator.

Won't be posting much, I suspect, as space and science aren't my profession. I felt it right to register rather than lurk. Excited to be here.

Cartooiverse - Welcome to the forums! Not knowing much about the topics in these forums should not be an excuse for not posting regularly. After all, if you don't know much about any aspect of astronomy, all you have to do is ask! Though there are some "experts" here, there are some beginners that know very little about the hobby so don't be ashamed or discouraged. Asking questions is the name of the game. Hope you enjoy the forums and looking forward to hearing from you some more. Mr Q

Hi everyone. I've been here for a few months, but never bothered to say anything, so I already know a lot of you, even if you don't know me. But, for any other lurkers out there, if you register, there are a bunch of thread management tools, even if you don't want to say anything, so I would recommend registering.

I tried the WWV but all I can recieve is the sound of the ionesphere(dont know if thats how you spell it) I should have borrowed some radio equipment and masts that I used to use when I was with the Army, happy days! I shall have a look with spaceweather.com thanks you.

I kind of figured that would be the case but spaceweather has the same info that you need. In the end, at least you did get a source of solar/auroal activity so success in any case. Mr Q

Hey all. I probably should have done this as my first, but hey, I never was one for doing things the "right" way.

I'm Randy, lifelong New Yorker who in the last six months relocated to the Seattle area. IT guy by trade, science geek by inclination.
