Default Bar Made From Arctic Ice Opens in London

Bar Made From Arctic Ice Opens in London

Quote:
LONDON (AP) - A chilly bit of Scandinavia is coming to the heart of London's West End Saturday with the opening of Absolut Icebar, a bar made entirely out of ice right down to the art on the walls and the glasses for the drinks.

Situated next to the accompanying but room temperature Below Zero restaurant, the bar is kept at minus 23 fahrenheit year round. For a cover charge of 12 pounds ($22.20), patrons are given a thermal cape, thick gloves and a glass made out of ice before entering the second of two airtight doors designed to keep heat out.

I wonder when we will hear of the first tongue frozen to the side of the wall.

About two minutes after the first drunk passes out face down.

Now I'm wondering about the bathrooms...possibility of freezing something else to a cold surface.

When someone is stone cold drunk, right?

I can almost hear the comment: "I'm just going to the bar to chill out for a while." (well, it looks like you only get 45 minutes)

Since the glasses are made of ice, do they bother with ice cubes? Instead of washing them, do they just melt them down? It might be amusing to go at least once, but the ice hotel I read about years ago doesn't appeal to me. I stood outside the ice castle in Quebec at -17 F and I'm just not going to pay to be cold unless I'm watching penguins in Antarctica or something adventurous. Brrr. Maybe a Londoner here will try it out and report.

The entire venue will be redesigned and rebuilt every six months, because the ice will gradually melt with daily use and the body heat of the crowds, Lund said. Icebar commissions artists to sculpt the decor on site, and opening day art includes a floor-to-ceiling vodka bottle and partial human figures along the walls.
Ohhhhh, take photo's to post on the BAUT, please!

-23° F? Brrrrrrr. That's colder than I thought it would be. No wonder the cover charge is 12 pounds, imagine the cooling bills they rack up.

I must say, though, that the parkas they issue guests are quite stylish indeed

Well, I guess that explains the shrinking arctic ice cap, then.

For a 12 pound cover, they better have some strippers in there.

I can see it working in the summer but in the winter I don't think that may people are going to pay to sit in the cold when they can do that outside for nothing.
