Is it my PC, or have a lot of people dropped off the map? Or, are we being sytemmaticly rubbed out? Should I watch my back? Or wear my tinfoil hat?

Well, color me surprised. It seems that right now, blogs are more popluar than BBs! Yesterday, BA posted on his blog a new frappr page for BAbloggers, http://www.frappr.com/badastronomyblog. In less than a day, it has 175 members. In BAUT's 2+weeks, we have only 146! And I looked through the names on the bablog page, there are only a handful of posters on both.

I wonder why the blog generates more interest than the BB for this type of thing!

edit: thanks, Candy. fixed it. forgot the "blog"

Spacemad's here as well! I just discovered this map today & have been reading all the posts in this thread - I got through 5 pages before jumping to the end!
I had no trouble at all (except I didn't understand the "shout out"!) & I've even posted a photo I took of myself while trying out the self portrait mode on my digicam during the summer.

A) Is that such a bad thing?

B) There's a reason for that. For one, outside of the UK, America is the largest nation of American-speaking population. (I say American, 'cause we all know that American is different than English).

C) Who cares about Britain anyways? (Seriously, just meant in jest; there are several people from the UK, though.)

Also, America has a very very large population. As a result, you can bet that there would be several people from there.

According to The Eyes of Nye, the US is the third most populous country in the world. (At least, that's what I remember him saying, and I'll admit I haven't checked his figures.) Therefore, logically, the majority of posters to an English-language board and readers of an English-language blog would be Americans, given that neither of the more populous countries have English as a major language.

What are the other two countries, India and China? Due to all the US outsourcing, India is getting pretty good with their English. I bet it will be their second language in the very near future.

I didn't know that India had a large Portuguese heritage until just recently. A lot of the people that work for our vendors have very "Latin" names. Interesting.

[edit for spelling]

The region of Goa, India, speakes Portuguese. It was the main Portuguese Empire outpost in the Indian subcontinent.

Those Portuguese sure got around, didn't they? My friend from Japan said they were a big influence in his country, too.

Poor Argos, you just look so lonely down there (on the map).

Um, Candy, India has about 200 languages. At least, about 200 languages considered "major" by its standards. While English is the international language of business, it would take a lot of outsourcing to make a population larger than that of the US to have English as a major language.

Gillianren, this link for India (wikipedia) states the Republic of India, is the second most populous country in the world and is the world's largest democracy, with over one billion people speaking about 800 distinct languages.

Off to the side, it also adds that the Official Language is Hindi, English, and "other" official languages.

I guess English is already an "Associate" Official Language.

Quote:
Languages
India is home to two main language families, the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian derived languages. India's national language is Hindi. English is classified as an Associate Official Language is widely used in higher echelons, and is seen as the language of social mobility and standing. Two classical languages native to the land are Sanskrit and Tamil.

Eighteen other official languages are recognised by the Constitution for official administrative use by various State Governments. The number of living languages in India has been estimated to be as high as 400. (See List of Indian languages by total speakers)

Okay, I'll concede that, but I'll also point out that it wasn't outsourcing but colonization that made it so. I would further suspect that, at this point, the majority of English speakers are in the cities, and most people in India who speak it only do so as a second language.

Based on my experiances traveling to other countries, I'll bet you'll find more Indians who can speak two or more languages, than you'll find in America.
