Default James Randi in the hospital

From the BA's blog...
Quote:
I just learned that James Randi is in the hospital. He suffered a heart attack late last week, and had to have bypass surgery. His condition is serious but stable– doctors expect him to recover. He’s being sedated right now to aid in his recovery (he’s such a cranky guy that this is certainly for the best).
We might want to send him our prays and thoughts, but I'm skeptical that it would actually help.
Still, I hope he gets well soon.

If you can show it helps, you might ask him your million dollars .

No kidding, I hope he recovers soon.

Have any ideas been put forward as to exactly how Geller bends the spoons?

With his hands.

Having met Mr. Randi recently at TAM4 I wish him a speedy recovery, not a week ago he was literally dancing on stage!

It is an old conjuring trick, Randi got some stage magicians to do it and pretend to be psychics like Uri to the various scientists that were saying that what Uri was doing was real.

Randi proved that scientists could be fooled as well.

We need him back

Randi is in the hospital, suffering a heart attack, and you dig this topic up? Do you not care about the health and well-being of another human being, or are magic tricks so important?

I'm not trying to be aggressive here, don't get me wrong, but still; if I was suffering from a major illness, I would prefer for people to talk about the situation as if I'm a person, not as if I'm just my occupation. Do you see what I'm saying? I'm having some trouble putting my thoughts into words.

Either way, I'm glad your question has been answered nonetheless.

I hope Randi gets better. I have no prayers to give him, but I have plenty of thought processes.

It was Zahl who brought Randi's long-time legal foe Geller up, with almost a curse.

All those years of litigation can't have been good for Randi's health http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randi

Well, that is true, actually. I won't defend Zahl. But that doesn't justify it, in my eyes. That's AKA "sinking down to their level". Though since I do that sometimes, I'll refrain from pointing too many fingers. Like I said before, the previous post was not meant aggressively.

An update from the JREF:
Quote:
James Randi underwent bypass surgery last Thursday. He is currently in stable condition. He is receiving excellent care, but will need quiet time to recover. We will release more information as it becomes available, and we ask everyone to please respect the family's wishes for privacy at this time.

UPDATE: Thank you for the flood of good wishes flowing in for Randi’s speedy recovery. Randi is hanging in there, and while his recovery is very slow, it is proceeding well. We’re expecting a complete comeback, but it may take several months before he’s back to his usual self. In the meantime, look for some special guest commentators in the Swift commentary, and business as usual for the JREF.

For those who feel a need to help, please consider donating blood at your local Red Cross or Community Blood Center. Cards may be sent to Randi in care of JREF, 201 SE 12 Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316.

Would like to add my best wishes for his speedy recovery as well. Love everything the guy stands for, and his amazing ability to get his points across. I so look forward to each Friday's weekly posting to SWIFT. . .

They didn't say how many bypasses were needed, did they? Usually a pretty good indicator of just how bad it was and how steep the odds are in recovery. On the upshot, I've known people who've had 5 and were back up and about in a week. The downside is even though they're 99.9% likely to fix your ticker, the risk of a post-operative stroke is what ends up taking most people. More bypasses = more likelihood of clotting.

Cute. It would have been much better if he'd just left the quacks alone, hey?
For the quacks, that is.

It's a good thing I didn't go. This may have happened sooner.

My grandmother had a (planned) quadruple. She was home three days later. Of course, she'd been walking five miles a day, every day, until that year, so she was in rather formidable shape for a 70 year old woman.

Still, as always, best wishes to The Amazing One. I'm looking forward to being able to save up some for my first TAM. (I'm aiming for 6.)

Best wishes to Randi for a full recovery ASAP and many more opportunities to trounce pseudoscience wherever it lurks. It's comforting to hear things are progressing for the better.

The latest from Linda at JREF:

Quote:
UPDATE:Today is a very good day!

I knew something was up when I entered the cardiac care unit and the doctors and nurses were doing high-fives at Randi’s bedside. Well, not exactly, but you get the idea. Randi is definitely on the road to recovery. He is awake, coherent, and cracking jokes, and admits he remembers almost nothing of the past 2 weeks. They are so pleased with his progress they will most likely move him to a regular room tomorrow. They’re working on his breathing exercises and he needs to get his lungs completely cleared, but they’re getting him up and sitting in a chair and they’ll try him on clear liquids later today. He’s lost a lot of muscle tone, which he’s going to have to work to rebuild, but the worst of this ordeal is definitely behind us. He still has a long recovery ahead of him, but he’s started on that road.
Definitely looks like things are moving in the right direction. Good news.

I'd say a large, though not irreplaceable, loss would be if he lost nimbleness of his fingers, though from the lecture I've shamelessly downloaded1, I'd say he can compensate quite well with trickety that doesn't need perfect coordination.
A far larger loss would have been to mental health, but my fears on that front has been alleviated.

1) I freely admit to downloading copies of his lectures, and giving copies to my friends, based on my impression that his focus is on getting the message out, rather than making money from the sales.
If my impression is wrong it only takes a single email from the relevant people to stop me.
