As you all know fusion of hydrogen, fuels the stars. It has been along time goal of scientists to create fusion in the lab and have an endless supply of energy.
That goal may finally be within our grasp. Scientists from Rensselaer Polytech have shown fusion in the lab by using sound waves to create bubbles in water that then collapse creating sufficient heat and pressure for fusion.
This reaction can be used for practical purposes by building a 5 cylinder piston engine.
One cylinder would be a normal internal combustion engine burning gas or ethanol. The other 4 cylinders would have water as there source of fuel. The internal Combustion cylinder exhaust gas would be fed thru a sound tuning device that would change the tone of sound from blowing air to a frequency used in the fusion experiments. It would work much like a trombone which changes blowing air to different musical tones only tuned for fusion.
The sound would then be fed to the other 4 cylinders causing bubbles and fusion in the water which would give off heat causing the water to expand and push the pistons of the other 4 cylinders. The pistons would be connnected to a crank shaft and the shaft connected to a electrical generator.
Of course it will take work to develop this engine.It is something any university lab in the country could work on with limited funding required. The machinery needed is available and simple.
But the huge benefit of using fusion for energy is more likely by this method than the hugely expensive tokamak etc designs being developed now.

There are references there. To repeat what was said the first time uralph brought this up, the jury is still out on sonofusion and even if it is real, it isn't likely it would be a useful method for power generation. We've discussed sonofusion several times on the BABB and now BAUT.
