Unhappy Humphrey (the cat) has died

The world of British politics is in mourning after the death of a much loved former civil service employee of the Cabinet office in Downing Street.

See this link

This is to leave your tributes, please try and restrain yourselves from being partisan.

That had me going - when I saw the thread title I thought you might be talking about a BAUT member. Ah, a tuxedo cat. Doesn't look much different from mine.

That was scary, especially since we haven't heard from our Humphrey in some time.

I'm wondering if Sticks couldn't request that a mod fix the thread title to reduce confusion and alarm? Perhaps "Humphrey (the cat) has died" or something?

I fixed the title.

Humphrey is also a turtle, one might recall. That was actually my first thought.

Mine also...I didn't even consider that it might be the poster known as Humphrey....

I had no idea that there was a poster named Humphrey

or even a turtle

It is just that in the UK most people knew who "Humphrey" was and I forgot that this board was international.

Humphrey the cat was named after a fictional character in a TV comedy, Yes minister, where Sir Humphrey Appleby (played by Nigel Hawthorn) was a permenant secretary that always tried to thwart or reign in his minister Jim Hacker (Paul Eddington). They later had another series called "Yes Prime Minister" where they had all been promoted, and were just as ever at loggerheads with each other.

I thought it was Nigel Hawthorn that had died (again) until I checked the link!

I'd no idea who Humphrey the cat was, and can't remember Humphrey the poster at all.

Oh! That siamese is some handsome. Beautiful animal. I've been trying to find myself a siamese kitten or youngling for ages now.

My recollection is that his posting dropped off considerably after he got married.

I think he's just found something more fun to occupy his time.

He'll be back, give him 5 or 6 years.

As far as the turtle goes, here's Humphrey's profile page, note the avatar.

If you miss his posting, you can always check out his website and drop him a line.

I was wondering (hoping, actually) if that was the source of the name.

This story actually made the news headlines over here.... but more along the lines that Humphrey 'the cat that Cherie Blair kicked out of downing street' had died... did this really happen, or was it 'artistic' liscense?

I don't know if that is true, Tony and Cherie don't technicaly even live at number 10, they live at number 11 which has a bigger flat as they have a family. Gordon Brown lives at number 10.

That was the CT

Cherie hated cats, and the way Humphrey left puddles everywhere. There was a photo taken of her holding Humphrey, but it was said that here body language indicated she was not best pleased. More on this here

The official line was

Quote:
... Humphrey was suffering from a kidney problem and needed a quieter home in the suburbs
At the time they said that Downing Street would get another cat, but AFAIK this never happened, which helps to add weight to the belief that Cherie did not like cats and wanted rid of him. If you look at the download I linked to there is a minute in there asking staff not to give Humphrey tit-bits on vetenary advice.

This story took on a bizarre twist, when under pressure of parliamentry questions suspecting that Humphrey had been put down on orders of Cherie, they arranged a photoshoot of Humphrey in retirement with journalists who knew Humphrey.

(You could not make this up really)

Are you guys across the pond just as obsessed with animals as the Brits?

Holding up newspapers, to verify that the photographs were freshly taken, according to the BBC.

First Animals? Yeah, it varies, but there've been the ongoing reports concerning various Presidential pets. We're more a dog nation, but Clinton's pet of choise was a cat, Socks.
