Default Fr, Wayne's 6 mo. Baut Data

My Top 5 Viewed Started Threads as of 3/22/06 (6 months here)

1. 3,357 Coolest Avatar Search (Off- Topic B...)
2. 1,138 Are we Sitting Ducks... (Conspiracy...)
3. 946 Billions and Billions (Off-Topic B...)
4. 791 History Test Time (Off-Topic B...)
5. 651 Dissecting a Hoax... (Life in Space)

Shameless Plug, yes. But it's not easy to find NEW topics for well-seasoned forum hunters. Preliminary deductions: People like to show off their personality, though they worry about terrorism, the world's future and past are overwhelmingly full of mysteries and intrigue, too bad some have to hoax our attentions. To all at Baut I say:

VIVAT ACADEMIA,/
VIVANT PROFESSORES;/
VIVAT MEMBRUM QUODLIBET,/
VIVANT MEMBRA QUAELIBET,/
SEMPER SINT IN FLORE!

Although it was a conspiracy, the coolest avatar search was your best thread that I was here for.

In what sense suntrack? avatars have been around for centuries as embodiments and accentuations of various qualities. Kind of maximising the bang for the buck, in a way.

Even the incarnation of various deities, like Vishnu etc.

From my dictionary:
avatar, n. (Hind. Myth.) descent of deity to earth in incarnate form; incarnation; manifestation; display; phase. [f. SKr. avatara descent (ava down + tara pass over)]

It looks like it was the Hindus.

As for the use of avatar as a visual representation of you on the 'net, I think the main source for popularization of the word was Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, even though it wasn't the first use.
