Default Name a Galaxy after a loved one

Let's see? Milky Way, hum, Cookie Way? No way. Please do not respond to this as IT IS NOT AN Advertisement for naming your own galaxy. But here is the link to a future enterprising young businessman:

Just so everyone is clear: One cannot buy naming rights to astronomical objects. Of course there are businesses that say they do, but they have no official recognition and some have don't even bother to give everyone an unique star (or what ever). And of course some other company might also sell the naming rights to the same star (or what ever).

Of course if anyone really, really wants a star or galaxy named after them, I am more than willing to pick out some random star or galaxy and print out a "certificate" saying that the name is [whatever]. Of course I will wait until the check clears first. And I do guarentee that the International Astronomical Union will NOT recognize it.

Harlequin, can I get in on this action. I got a new printer so I can print up some fancy certificates too.

We're all going to be really upset when we find that billions of years ago, someone claimed ownership of a star, and that star spewed out a bunch of carbon atoms, and we are made from those atoms, and now we owe trillions of galactic credits in licensing fees to that being's estate.

our Sun could be named by some alien race. Perhaps aunt Agather?

We could be the Agatherians to this race of people.

I really don't see anything wrong with this - except for the handing money over for the privlege part - if its exorbitant.

If `buying' a star costs the same as buying a certificate, any certificate, with some fancy writing on it, then it really doesn't matter if you're making a false purchase - surely any one with half brain could work out that the certificate really means nothing in terms of real ownership.

As long as you're not making `monthly' payments for ownership of your star, I don't really have a problem with it - its just a gesture really.

I would be interested to know the actual prices that people charge for these types of certificates though.
