Possibly it's the Warren Grove gunnery range; run by the NJ Air National Guard, but used by all services. If that's it, you won't see much from the ground but "Restricted Area, Keep Out" signs.

I don't want to disuade you from taking a look for yourself, but
on another map, I found the label "cranberry bog" just to the east of the road (539) and north of the small river which goes under the road near the center of your map. My guess is that the shapes are ponds having to do with cranberry harvesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranberry Quote:

The map is on Microsoft Terraserver. The aerial photo of the area
is dated 4/16/1995, which I notice is 11 years, 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day ago. ![]() http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.c...344&Y=2757&W=3 -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

We are some gigantic alien toddler's version of a refrigerator magnet letter game. They are angry because the refrigerator is warming, Bush will soon tap their phone lines to see what they are up to, and will find out that they stole the 26 million veteran's names and addresses, to be targeted for alien abduction. Several journalists from The National Inquirer will be arrested when it is discovered they already knew but were too busy taking pictures of potatoes shaped like Osama bin Laden to warn everybody properly.

Actually, the aliens decided that crop circles are too cryptic and they are going to have to spell things out for us.

The experts say mowing patterns should be changed, and I got bored with just going up and down one week and back and forth the next. So I'm doing some circles and some cool wave patterns. Looks pretty spiffy for the 1st couple days after mowing. I'll have to get on the barn roof and take some pictures of it freshly mowed one of these times. My favorite so far is just simple circles, changing direction each time around. From above it makes the yard look like a humongous bulls-eye.

I wish they made those magnet letters with stronger magnets. They barely stay on the fridge. If I had a car that I didn't worry about what the finish looked like, I'd stick a bunch of them on the sides. I't be fun to see what people did with them whenever I parked in a public place.
Might make a fun hidden camera sequence. Maybe glue them on and see people's reactions when they try to move them around. Maybe take a bunch of them and glue them to the trunk lid. Make it say: "My other car is a refrigerator." Or "My other refrigerator is a car." Or "My other car is a chalkboard." Or . . . Yes, it's a slow day at work.

Farmer--good idea (without the glue). I love messing up people's fridges and leaving odd sentences behind. A car would work well too.

Excellent puzzle! I don't think they can be cranberry bogs, which look like this:
http://www.terraserver-usa.com/image...kewood%7cnj%7c I don't think they're firebreaks either because theyre so discontinuous. I'd be surprised if they're any kind of agriculture because they're so isolated, some without even roads in to them. I'll guess, since it's a wildlife management area, that they are clearcuts for wildlife habitat. But if so they're certainly laid out with whimsy, and I wonder why they look so glossy. I have a colleague who lives down that way, I'll drop him a line. It's worth getting to the bottom of this. |

Could they be abandoned clay mines?

I zoomed the images. Take a look at the relationship of the roads/paths and the "letters/rectangles." In many cases, the roads go THROUGH the rectangles. This tells me that there are no structures there and that the figures are clearings and are level ground -- not structures or pits of any kind.
IMO. this militates against the figures being cranberry fiels or any sort of mining activities.

Looking forward to ground truth on this. Aliens? Barley? Cranberries?

There is a town in Texas that I have flown over several times on the Nashville to Austin leg of my travels in which the name of the town is spelled out in forests, and the letters are about two miles tall. For some reason I can't recall the name of the town, and I've never seen it on the Google Satellite images. If someone can help me out on this I'de appreciate it.

After a little digging, it appears this is just the name of the guy who owns the property. Who also happens to have a lot of free time. ![]() It's a bit southeast of Austin. As for the "letters" in my state, I've had a rash of errands suddenly appear to stall my excursion, I'm hoping to check it out by mid-week. Here's to the unknown! |

After spending some time looking at survey sites, geological and otherwise last weekend, I finally emailed the State of New Jersey since that's where the photos came from (you have to pay for them online).
I got my reply today, so here it is: Quote:
So there you go, Soylentgreen--quail plots! (Hey, and it's nice that your state responds! )

Well that's it, now I'm convinced they are covering something up. Quail management plots indeed!
I bet the only reason they answered was it is a chance to spread more disinformation. Nothing will disuade me from getting the truth out...in my new book for only $29.95.
