Default Indonesia Cops It Again

It may not have been as big as the last, but another tsunami has hit Indonesia. click

They've had a pretty bad run over the last few years - earthquakes, mudslides, the Boxing Day tsunami. They just can't catch a break.

As Indonesia is located on the upside of a subduction zone,
volcanoes, earthquakes and the resulting tsunamis are unfortunate, inevitable occurences.

I dont know if there is extra activity at the moment, or we just hear more due to improved global reporting.

Well, hopefully this latest disaster will again put the pressure on the Indonesian government to institute the warning buoys they continually talk about - and saying they're too expensive is a complete cop-out.

They were given billions of dollars in the wake of the Boxing Day tsunami - where has it all gone?

They probably considered getting houses, water and power restored so more people don't die to be a more urgent thing to use the money for.

You might as well ask why the New Orleans levees haven't yet been built to the level Katrina showed was needed.

Correction, they were PROMISED billions of dollars, and not in cash, either. Some of the donations were value equivalent in supplies, like water, food, clothing, medications, helicopter fuel costs, useless heelrockers to look sad into the camera telling the world how much we supposedly cared.

That kind of thing. Real, useful, functional aid for rebuilding's been a bit of a tougher battle.

You make good points, I do realise that much of the aid was value equivalent, and it is also clear that more pressing concerns - that you mention, will obviously make a primary demand on any aid money.

I concede that, though I would still argue that the Indonesian government has a reactive rather than pro-active mentality. Apparently these buoys are manufactured by a select few companies, one of which was I think located in Germany. Shouldn't they then be placing the purchase and utilisation of these buoys into any aid package delivered by Germany perhaps?

The real problem is just the endemic corruption within Indonesia, one of the most corrupt nations on the planet. Allocation of resources has never been a strong point of theirs.

Sure, if they get a choice. Then again, haven't you ever heard the expression "beggars can't be choosers"?
