I save them too and put them in a jar too. When it gets full, I take it to the bank and cash it in.

Spend em!
Having said that, I do have half a whiskey tin full of them (I just save the odd shiny one), nominally for use in games etc. Hmm I wonder how much now? go's away to count...

My dad and I have this thing we do. We never use change. We always break a new dollar, and pocket the change. At the end of the day, we put the change into a container. It adds up if you don't touch it.

Dump the penny and the nickel (both cost more than their face value to produce) and create $1 and $2 coins instead, like the Canadians. Plus get rid of the dollar bill so people have to go to the dollar coin.

I hate pennies.

While I see the advantage of eliminating the small change, I'm curious what you believe the advantage would be in introducing large change into full circulation?

BTW I believe pre 1982 US cents made of mostly copper have a current worth greater than their face value? maybe worth keeping them.

$1 and $2 coins are cheaper than $1 and $2 bills - primarily because they last longer - and are much harder to counterfeit.

The reason for eliminating the bills is one I too have mentioned before - people simply won't choose coins over bills, so they'll need to be forced to if it's going to happen.

As for the OP, I always spend my change. The only time I ever have more than a dollar's worth of change is if I went out and forgot to bring my change with me.

Darn...I thought Banquo was asking if he should save or chuck his pennies...

...and my response was going to be send them to me, but I now see that isn't what this thread is about.

Currently the penny and nickle are costing more than they are worth to produce. Go with the Euro style. Small penny and small nickle, and have a $1 and $2 coin. I was fascinated by the German Euro when I went there in 2002 - right after they had made the switch from the DM. Pennies and nickles are huge in size compared to what they are worth, and vending machines won't take pennies.

Technically, nether have you. The loonie was introduced in 1987.

Only in that it's causing problems in my basement bathroom. Dad didn't treat the wood properly, so surface mold forms on the baseboards near the tub and behind the toilet whenever the fixtures sweat.

Well, no reason for me to be surprised. There were indications the house was prone to that problem. I'll just pick up a dehydrator for the bathroom, should go a long way towards preventing additional problems until we have time to replace the baseboards properly.

Otherwise, the basement is cool and comfortable, and the nightly thunderstorms are rather pretty.

I think the reason people prefer dollars bills over dollars coins is a pocket full of dollar bills won't make your pants fall down.

Dump the penny and the nickel (as per your reasons). Then, dump the dime, the quarter, fifty-cent piece, and silver dollar. Dump the proposed $2 coin, too, as well as the $1, $5, $10, etc.

Dump it all!

I rarely pay for anything via cash. Always credit, and I have a nice neat highly secure record online any time I need to review it. And if my wallet's stolen, I simply report it right away and am out just $50, which is a lot less than what most people carry in their wallet.

Stores don't like people using credit on small items because the overhead they pay to the credit companies (which they have to eat) is a significant fraction of the total price. I pay credit for most things, but I start transitioning to cash at about the $20 level or below.

We do that too. Accumulates at the rate of about $500 per year.

As far as $1 coins versus $1 bills, what BigDon said about pants falling down. Unless they start making the coins about the size of a dime.
