Blob, can't your advice get some people into serious trouble? Law inforcement folks in India aren't all nice and cuddly like ours. And considering why they freaked out so hard they are going to be hypersensitive. I'm not saying what they did was right. There is got to be a better way for them to do what they are trying to achieve. But have you ever been beaten with a nightstick? I have.

Even when that "one" ends up "dieing in police custody"? That and how do you know the person you just gave that info to wasn't one of the very people that the local authorities aren't trying to curtail? Do you know him? I think your irresponsiblity in this matter is staggering!

Hum,
while i could mention certain countries where just reading information that the state deems unacceptable will lead to immediate internment. In this particular case, i don't think India falls into that category. With regards to this, it could be said that the country is on par with America.

The Times of India, the most widely read newspaper here, published how to get to blogs in roundabout ways. I don't know why they did that... but most people know how to use proxies anyway.
It's irresponsible to spread the word on proxies and all... I know.

Rahuldandekar - I'm sorry you lost all that work and am not trying to attack you.
I'm assuming your goverment did this in response to the bombings commited by those animals in Mumbai. What, some 200 dead and 800 wounded? That they think this is the best way to sever communications between groups of extremists until they can come up with something better. (Once again, good job on the work around Blob.)

Thanks for the concern, BigDon.
I've not lost my work... I just can't view it directly. Still, I can post on my blog. ![]() Yeah, the brute force method is the best when such things happen and immediate action is required. As I've said on my blog, I'm ready to be patient and wait. I won't spread the knowledge of the roundabout ways, and not encourage others to do so. If it's security, it's important.

Hum,
in this case, it wasn't some sort of global network of terrorists (if they exist at all) who carried out the atrocities. As far as security goes it would be similar to banning exporting barbwire to countries that have internment camps, imho. It could be said to have done exactly the opposite. It is widely know that emails are monitored, especially by those who have something to hide. And it is widely known that the US NSA has recently designed new software to analyse and monitor blogs to identify individuals who would do such things. Freedom and the innocent are the only ones affected.

The issue is not whether or not the government knows better or whatever. The issue, as I see it, is that people caught using the proxies etc. can be prosecuted.
Now. If everyone uses 'em, that's good ol' nonviolent protest, a grand tradition in India, as we all ought to know. If even a vocal group does it, same thing. But for one person to quietly use them doesn't help the situation and opens them up for prosecution, and while I don't know what the penalty will be, any country that would limit its people's free access to information, proven historically to be one of the great supporters of intelligent government, will probably not be reasonable on the subject.

For the last ten years, networking security specialists have preached the use of firewalls, anonymity, protecting one's self and one's computers against threats, including identity theft, which has reached epic proportions. A proxy is an integral part of any firewall solution. Proxies aren't bad, as they protect one's identity. I don't use them while on Baut (forbidden, not sure why, as username/password/per-session cookie is more than enough to ensure you are you - that's what banks do), but they're used in most major corporations as they provide a number of services for those behind the firewall, including intrusion detection, and preventing networks outside the firewall from learning info about the network that's inside the firewall. Used on the Internet they can protect you as well, preventing hackers from gaining access to key info such as where you live (usually they can pin you down to your zip code). Proxies are good. Banning proxies is bad. Go ahead - spread the word! Here are a few key links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_privacy
