Thanks for the input, but I figured the problem out myself.
For anyone whose interested, it turned out to be a problem with ZoneAlarm, an interesting problem that I've encountered before. The first time I saw it was when I was trying to play an online videogame for the first time. Before I clicked the games .exe, I turned off Zonealarm as it tends to cause problems with things like that. The game wouldn't connect; and in fact i couldn't even run a successful traceroute to it's server. Eventually, on a whim, I turned ZoneAlarm back on and suddenly the game worked fine. This time was similiar, I had zonealarm off when I noticed I couln't use opera or mozilla. Eventually I turned it on again and they began functioning again. It's as if ZA is leaving something on even after it's been turned off, which doesn't know what to block and what not to without the main program.

I had the same problem with ZA last night. after getting a new computerI wanted to make a network to transfer my files. even after closing Zone Alarm I had trouble. It was actually still running in the background after I turned it off!
