hello people!
okay so this is my first post. YAH ME! anywhos done with the intro, lets get to my question. (excuse any bad spelling) okay obviously over the years ive had different teachers who taught me different things. so one year (when i waz young) my teacher told me bout DNA and how its like an "instruction book" 4 ur body. it tells u wat color ur hair is and stuff like that everything down to the size of ur big toe. that same year, but sometimelater, i learned that identical twins have different sets of fingerprints even though everything else about them is the same. the next year we got a little more into dna and i learned that identical twins have identical dna. so i waz lyke wait....if dna is the "instuction book"for ur body and twins have the exact same dna, how can their fingerprints be different???? i think im really missing something here. plz tell me if u kno, or even if u have any ideas, id really appreciate it. thanx -gravy (cool codename huh??? ) |

Nah, it's not an instruction book. A better anology might be a recipe. If you use the same recipe two raisin cakes might taste the same, but every individual raisin isn't going to be in the same place in each cake. Lots of things about your body are determined by chance. Finger prints are one of these. Perhaps your genes define some broad parameters such as if you'll have loops or whorls, but after that it's just a random process. There's not really that much infomation in DNA, not enough to micromanage the growth of an entire body, so basically it delegates.
Oh, and I'm supposed to say something like welcome to the board, and congratulate you on your choice of name, but I might leave that to people who actually have social skills. |

the small linear grooves and ridges on our fingers called fingerprints are formed in embryo in advanced stages of gestation. It is effected by DNA and also the wall of uterus so that's why even in identical twins fingerprints won't match, because if two person fell down in same position and in same fashion they won't get exact same hurt.

Future Scientist,
A gud way 2 think about it is, sapos one twin get bumped on de hed, and the udder, he dont. U can imagine dat the 1 twin, he get a scar, and the udder, he dont. By the way, this is fun, but if u becum a future scientist, dont try writing a manuscript with this kind uv spelling! L8r, ![]()

Genes, environment & brain, a 3-way interplay that makes you who you are.
Think of the genes as the recipe, the environment as the kitchen, and the brain as the cook; except the cook doesn't play much influence until it gets a little experience, and it's initial starting state is determined by the other two, and then it ad-libs a bit (unlike the genes, it can change quickly) as the dish (your life) takes form. For dessert we'll be serving strawberry tart with a bit of rat. Welcome to the board.

There are other factors than can change fingerprints as well. I have 20 to 25 scars on the fingertips of my left hand from various knife sharpening mishaps. (how does UPS knock so loud anyway?) That would the clumsy cook at work. ![]()
