Default French victories?

Hmmm... Yesterday, I googled "french victories" and the response was "Did you mean French defeats?" I'm not kidding. But today it just responds:

french military victories
Your search - french military victories - did not match any documents. Suggestions:. - Make sure all words are spelled correctly. - Try different keywords. ...
Has anybody else gotten the "Did you mean French defeats?" response?

It appears that it was a Google Easter Egg. When I do it now on Google, the first link is not a joke google link, but a link to someone else's website with the joke.

I just can not understand how this endless French-bashing doesn't get boring - Or more appropriately, embarrassing - for people here. The nauseating onslaught of "Freedom Fries" mentality in this country for the last half-a-decade has been nothing short of ignorant and disgusting.

The worst part in so many sharing such a shallow, mob-inspired mindset is that it's a product of a general public with almost no actual knowledge of history!

Well I think we paid them back not once, but twice, for their help in our independence. Three times if you count that mess in Vietnam.

But also you'ld best smile when you do any French bashing around me. My people were fur trapping here in North America since at least the 1660's.

I'm not sure who is French-bashing here in this thread yet. I'm guuessing that there may have been some smiles, but except for one previous post (which contained "Shhhhhh..."), all we have been doing is sharing the facts of our observations. And there was even a bit of balance from Galacsi:
Quote:
I did the same with "American victories" and the answer was " You mean Grenada island" ?
which was still just a statement of fact. My original post to start this thread did nothing more than state an observation/experience and ask a question if anyone else could confirm the behavior of the Google search. I didn't even put a smiley anywhere in my post.

Not in the thread...in the U.S. This google crap is just another lovely result of the ignorance.

Apologies for any miscues, but I considered it already obvious(and assumed anyone else scanning the posts would) that no actual post in the thread was French-bashing.

It seemed unecessary to explain the use of 'here' as meaning this country and not this thread for that reason.

Note that the google thing is NOT the doing of google itself, rather the other site (albino black sheep) that is mimicking google's page if you hit "I'm feeling lucky," as it is the first result (perfect match to page title).

Hey, if there's going to be any French bashing round here best leave it to us English. We've had far more practice than, well, just about anyone else.

As Alan Coren put it;

"The French are our nearest neighbours, and we are therefore bound by ties of jealousy, mistrust and hatred.

They haven't brought the shears back either!"

For the English the french are the trad enemy. At the start of WW1 the British Generals when refering to 'The Enemy' meant France.

Scotland has a different relationship, they were 'not quite allies' of France the Auld Alliance?

Just about anyone who hates the English is okay in Scottish eyes.

The battle of Hastings come to my mind when I think about French victories. Through history They´ve won more than they have lost

Meh, this joke was cooked up at least three years ago. Someone was monkeying with Google's hit counter somehow, and got that page called up.

France has had it runs where its been a force to be reckoned with, they just hit a rough patch in the 20th Century.

Frankly, there isn't a European nation that oughtta be crowing at all about either World War, since TWICE they had to drag the US kicking and screaming into it to straighten the mess out...

I'm not sure the Normans qualify as French.

While I think that a country's worth isn't measured in how many wars they've won(mainly because just about the only war my country's ever won is the civil war..), I do have some objections to that list:

It counts WWI&II battles as well as the first Gulf War as French victories even though the victories came with allies against an enemy by itself. Also I wouldn't count succesful peace keeping missions as wars won.

And then it got all complicated when James V died and his daughter Mary took the throne and then ran to France.

Whenever I hear the term French victories, Austerlitz always seems to come to mind first.

Quite so; "Australian victories":
1. General John Monash - The Australian Victories in France in 1918...
2. Rod Laver - The Australian victories...the first of Laver's 20 major [tennis] titles...
