Default Poker? Anyone play online?

Just curious, does anyone here at BAUT play poker? Particularly the online variety, and yes I am referring to Texas Hold-em - haven't played a different version for probably 8 years or so.

Where would anyone here play online?

I just joined Full Tilt Poker - mainly because they sent me an email - so sometimes pushy advertising spam does work I guess - haven't put any money into them, and don't plan to because I know I'm not good enough, but it is a piece of cake to play for free with them.

They basically give you 1000 play money chips to play with, and you can reload that every 5mins if you lose it - no limits to these reloads AFAIK, but I guess if you're reloading every 20mins you probably need to reasses your strategy!

Anyway, anyone else here play interactive online games? Particularly card games like poker?

The only online games I play are the MMO variety, but The Girlfriend just started an account at Party Poker.net. Intallation was a little dodgy, and it seems to have an unhealthy fixation for Internet Explorer. I've got another friend that playes a lot, but I'm not sure which service he uses.

Just played my first online tourney, finished 126th/1800, which I'm pretty happy with - still can't believe my pair of kings was beaten by a set of 7s.

Doh!

By a set of 7s, do you mean, three 7s?

Be careful about on-line poker, I've had buddies who got hooked on it and were sometimes losing over $1000 a week. Yes they'd win occasionally but they fell into the "remember the hits and forget the misses" fallacy big time. One night I watched as one of them lost $700 in an hour.

Moral of the story: only gamble an amount that wouldn't hurt to lose. If losing $25 is no big deal, but losing $50 would be annoying, stick to $25 a session.

At the place I live our accountant embezzled 300.000 DKK (>50.000 USD) from us to pay for online gambling, not the best advertising it can get.

I've played NL hold-em since '93 and really enjoy the game. It's not gambling that really interests me - it's the involved intricacies and calculating the odds on the fly, the psychological elements. IMO, Pokerstars has the best interface and RNG. I'm not attempting to advocate gambling, let alone doing so online in presenting my recommendation; you can play for free with fake chips if you like. If, however, anyone was interested in playing for real cash, I think this software has the most to offer.

For World of Warcraft, someone created an add on that lets you play Texas Hold'em with raid members.

For those of us Alliance side, its a wonderful way to cope with long battleground ques.

Yep, that's exactly what happened! I had him covered, but he got me on the turn, the river was irrelevant!

Actually, entered another tournament soon after that and managed to finish a very disrespectful 1662nd/1800!

I guess what that tells me is that I still have a lot of work to do to think of myself as a decent poker player!

Yeah, I have a couple of friends who play at PokerStars. They've been into it for years though and I think they use a couple of sites. As for putting real money on the line, I've no intention of doing that if I can't prove myself by winning some free-roll tournaments. If I can't do that, throwing hard earned to try and improve my play is obviously an idea straight out of the bottom drawer.

I've been playing on Full Tilt for six months or so. I tend to stick to tournaments.

I wouldn't get too down on your Kings getting cracked by trip 7s. Pocket aces against ten random hands only wins about 35% of the time.

Not surprised, just annoyed! I had him beat, I had probably an 80% probability of taking the pot on that hand - he got lucky!

But yeah, that type of thing does happen all the time.

Will look out for you gruesome, in fact - I think I may have seen you the other day - you don't have an avatar with the gray rock character do you?

I have a friend who plays Party Poker all the time, let me sit in on a few hands and it was fun. I then went through the fuss of installing high-speed Internet at my house so I could play, and immediately the Poker things were outlawed! Probably saved me some $$. Someone up there is looking out for me! :-)

Never play poker. I have the worst "luck" out of anyone I've ever known. Scratch off lotto tickets? Back when I was a kid and would get these, I'd lose every single time. No free tickets. No dollar, two dollars, five dollars. Nothing every time. Twist-off bottle caps? Never won a free soda. Never won anything. Still haven't. I'm the ultimate Atlantic City wingman; I soak up all the bad "luck" in the room.
