Default Steve Irwin "Crocodile Hunter" dies

Absolute tragedy. He died doing what he loved - filming an underwater documentry on Stingrays. A great man.

Spare a thought for his family - Terri, Bindi and Bob.

Unhappy Croc Hunter Steve Irwin is Dead

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...9/s1732439.htm

Quote:
The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44.

Police say he was stung through the heart by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas.

He was filming a documentary when the accident occurred around midday AEST near the Low Isles.

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...34-952,00.html

They said it was a "sting-ray barb",

http://www.mote.org/clientuploads/sh...y_barb_web.jpg

Quote:
The venom apparatus or "sting" of a stingray is a spine or modified dermal denticle (the scales covering sharks and stingrays) with two ventral grooves filled with venom-producing tissue. The venom apparatus is surrounded by a cell-rich covering or sheath that also may produce lesser amounts of venom. The venom itself is a largely protein-based toxin that causes great pain in mammals and may also alter heart rate and respiration. However, since it is proteinaceous, it can be inactivated by exposure to high temperatures. Because of this, immersion of the wound in hot water or application of a heat compress are recommended as an immediate treatment for unfortunate victims of a stingray injury or "envenomation." Although this may reduce the initial pain of a stingray injury, victims should still obtain medical assistance so that the wound can be properly examined and cleaned to avoid secondary infections or other complications.

Well that is bad news, I fell sorry for his family, but he did live a very dangerous lifestyle.

I'm reserving judgement, too. For some reason, some people think it's funny to mock up official-looking websites claiming celebrities are dead. Just ask poor Jaleel White.

Edit: Okay, I've poked around. It's official; he's dead. I fail utterly to be surprised and hope that his wife will not feed crocodiles while holding the kid.

This is very unforunate. Not only is it a tragic loss of human life, but it's also a hit for Australia's economy. I'm very surprised to hear about the manner of his death. I felt sure that the law of poetic justice would cause him to choke to death on a pretzel or something.

I would like the internet to take a nanosecond's silence in honor of his memory.

Thank you.

It's true.

Amazing that a guy who daily battled with Crocs, sharks, snakes and worse, should be taken out by something that really is mostly harmless. Had it struck him anywhere else, he would have lived, but the struck to the heart was fatal.

WOW!!! I had no idea, until reading this topic. You'd figure as much as I watch Animal Planet, I'd pick it up sometime on there. This very sad to hear. Was it a "natural" death or "unnatural" death? Forgive me for being callous, but this guy is one guy who you simply expect would die in a dangerous encounter with some animal. Of course, I don't know what happened, but you can't ignore the dark side of every one of us had pondered at least once what and how one of these animals in the thousands he has challenged would do him in, no?

Some say the earth is mostly harmless. It is sad, but he did have a high risk job, and it isn't all that unusual for people to eventually get badly hurt or killed when regularly dealing closely with wild animals. Unfortunately, it only takes that one mistake or that one bad day. Also, I do wonder if he was less familiar with underwater safety. It's not all the same thing.

That wasn't what happened, did you ever see the follow up, or did you just run with the hype?

What happened then? I saw the video of him holding his baby while feeding a croc.

The clip they showed here (constantly) had him in the croc pen at a show, baby in one hand, croc chow in the other. I recall him having to do a little hop backwards when the croc made a move at him. After that, I didn't see any sort of follow up with it. To be honest, I'd stopped watching him sometime before that. His shows started out with a great WOW factor, and we all talked about how nuts he'd have to be to do that stuff. (nuts being a relative term for anything the speaker wouldn't do). After a while they seemed to get a "how can I to that?" feel to them. This was about the time all of those other 'extreme' animal hosts came out. Here in the States it pretty much mentioned hand in hand with Michel Jackson dangling his baby out of the hoterl window.

He was stung by a stingray either through left side of his chest or through his heart. Either way, he suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The thing is that Stingrays will only sting when they feel under threat. They don't use their barb to attack creatures. I can only imagine that Mr Irwin was unaware or didn't care for the danger he'd be putting himself in by getting too close....

I always figured he would get chomped. Ironic that a relatively 'safe' animal got him.

Here's the CNN article:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapc...man/index.html

He claimed the child wasn't in danger, but he certainly was holding the child while feeding the croc.

Usually it's physical contact that makes them attack. I'd say he just got unlucky. Either for some reason the ray got spooked or he accidently contacted it. I suppose it's possible he didn't know the danger he was in, some people have trouble remembering more than a couple thousand of the species that can kill you around here.
