Default BREAKING: Aircraft strikes NYC high-rise

Aircraft crashes into New York building

Quote:
Police say an aircraft has crashed into a building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue. It is near Rockefeller Center.

There was no word on casualties.

Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

It's unclear if it was a small plane or a helicopter.
There is no indication of terrorism at this point and it is clear from vidoe that this is not a large commercial aircraft.

Looks like an accident. Or a suicide.

According to CNN.com, it is a 50 story residential building, looks like the fire is confined to a small portion of the building.

No info, but my gut says accident with a small aircraft, not terrorists.

Smells like suicide, but of course my guess is as good as yours. I hope nobody inside got killed.

from cnn.com
Quote:
A small airplane crashed into a 50-story residential building on Manhattan's East Side Wednesday and flames were shooting out from several windows midway up.

The Federal Aviation Administration described the plane as a "general aviation" fixed-wing aircraft flying under visual flight rules, meaning a pilot was flying by visual landmarks.

The plane hit the Belaire Condominiums, built in 1989 at 524 E. 72nd Street near the East River. More than 150 firefighters are on scene of a four-alarm fire in the building.

There was no word on casualties. NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) said it had put fighter aircraft into the air over numerous U.S. cities, though they said they had no reason to believe the event in New York was anything more than an accident, sources told CNN's Barbara Starr. It did the same thing after the September 11 2001, terrorist attacks.

Have any of our urbanites noticed the combat air patrols around their city?

Looks like the fire's out,the general concensus seems to be that it's an accident.

A witness pilot identified it without a doubt to be a plane.

Well, common sense says that terrorists don't strike apartment buildings with small planes. This looks very much like a tragic accident. A suicide like what happened in Milan, Italy can't be dismissed yet.

Frankly you can't dismiss anything, however unlikely it is.

Let me ask you this, what is more scary, the fact that a plane may attack a small building, or that they only go for the biggest ones meaning the majority of people are safe?

It's called terrorism for a reason.

well, there is nothing to stop a drunk pilot getting into his own private plane and flying off, or is there?

Didn't a copycat suicide in the US happen with a small aircraft shortly after 9/11?

Nor anything to stop a troubled teenager under the (possible) influence of acne medicines, as happened in Miami a few months after 9/11. He stole a plane and flew it into an office building. He was the only casualty.

For crying out loud! The "fear" potential is going to be wrung out as extensively as possible by the irresponsible media and partisan authorities as it is.

I'm becoming convinced that nobody actually has to do anything to get this country to disassemble itself. Insecurity, paranoia, the more-than-willing-to-exploit-the-fear politicians and the more-than-willing-to-give-up-rights-out-of-fear souls will do it all.

I just alluded to it simultaneously with your post. I think the Florida suicide happened first, so unless someone with better memory comes along it looks like it's time to hit Google!

Yes, I forgot that one since it was far less dramatic. The events occurred near each another.

Both accidents occurred in 2002, Tampa crash on January 5th and Milan crash on April 18th.

Sure you can. In fact I'd say dismissability is directly proportional to unlikelyhood.

I'm going to have to go with equally scary, because they both rate about a 0 on my scare-o-meter. I don't live my life fearing things that have about a 1 in a million chance of killing me.

To be fair, Dragon star was responding to someone who posted that "it certainly isn't terrorism".

I agree that terrorism is unlikely, especially given some eyewitness reports (one said that the nose dipped severely at end, interpreted by an MSNBC reporter as a plane in a stall). But until more details come out, any conclusion is premature.
