Default Mechanics of New Year's

So when they drop the ball in NYC, obviously they do it at midnight Eastern time.

So when we watch that on TV here in the midwest, it's actually 1 AM in NYC.

Either they drop the ball several times, or everybody west of Eastern Time is watching reruns.

Just seems odd that we huddle about the TV for a few seconds to watch what others sw an hour ago.

Or three hours ago in our case. Of course if you watch the cable news channels you can probably see it live.

That's what I'm talking about!

Since Times Square and the dropping of the ball seems to be everybody's event to key from, then it really does begin at 11 Central. We should all ring in the new year at the same time instead of having it roll across the country in stages. Either that, or each time zone needs their own ball.

What would that be like if, say Dick Clark dies within 1 hour of the ball dropping. (Entirely possible despite the multitude of plastic surgeries he has had in order to make people perceive him as "young"). Everybody in the US outside of Eastern Time would be ringing in the new year with video of a dead guy.

It oughta be illegal to portray a taped event as if it were live. Broadcast anywhere outside the Eastern Time Zone, the video from Times Square should have a big banner scrolling across the bottom continuosly reminding viewers that the footage they are watching was recorded 1, 2, or 3 hours ago.

You know, I'm sorry Dick Clark had a stroke and I give him a lot of credit for trying, but he was really creeping me out, watching him on TV. For one thing, he spoke like he was 100 years old, but his hair looked like he stole it from a 25 year old. I think you need to retire already Dick.

Meh, I'll take him doing this for another 30 years over some of the halfwits they've tried to get to stand in for him.

I saw the last few minutes before and the first few minutes after midnight (Central Time) and I'd agree it was wierd watching him. Especially when he did that granny thing where he clenched his jaw and stuck his chin out. Reminded me of Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies when she was being defiant.
