Default Bombings in Thailand - I was there

Even though this is old news now :-[ ....

Two dead, 34 wounded in nine Bangkok bombings
Updated Sun. Dec. 31 2006 4:34 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Nine bombs exploded across Bangkok, Thailand in the hours leading up to, and following, the beginning of the New Year -- killing two people and injuring 34.

The first six, near-simultaneous, explosions occurred Sunday night and killed both victims, forcing officials to cancel countdown festivities. Twenty-six people were injured in the blasts.

The fact is folks, as I had mentioned in several threads in a few forums, I was going to be in Bangkok for the changeover to 2007 - a necessary stopover on my return to Tokyo. The bombings occured before and after the New Years changeover.

We were not told in the airport, but security was very VERY tight - armed personnel everywhere. I only found out when my concerned pareants called me when I got back into Tokyo.

Two people that I met on the plane I am now concerned about - a young lady whose email address I have (and yes, I have emailed her).

Even though nothing happened at the airport (at least my part of the airport) I am a little rattled by this.

Many (some from here) will probbaly be disappointed that I was not harmed or killed

Wow. No, I'm glad you are ok. To be honest, I have not kept up with the news over the holidays, and the American media has hardly mentioned the bombings, so I know almost nothing about them.

Glad you're okay, Damienpaul. The bombings got some mention in the press here, but not much.

Hope you're new friend is okay, too.

Just out of ridiculously perverse curiousity, why in Hades dark heart would you assume anyone here would want you at ground zero?

Anyhow, glad you're safe in Japan, hit a bar and do shots until the guy doing karaoke looks funny, then sleep it off.

The Victory monument is a long way from the airport, so you were quite safe. Still was an ugly incident though, and very uncharacteristic.

Well Mr. Paul, I see you have escaped my wrath once again. But know this, time is running out for you and your feeble band of freedom fighters.

just kidding. I have no clue who you are but I'm glad you made it out safely.

At the airport we were ushered to our terminal waiting areas by armed soldiers - looking back I have never seen security like that before at an airport.

In terms of the last statement - actually not an assumption - a reflection of sevral emails I received inc members from here and elsewhere.

But thank you all for your kind words - no word yet from my friend

Good to know that you're safe, damienpaul. I wouldn't want anything to happen to anyone from the BAUT forum. After all, we're like family here.
